How many people did they can, if it was a few it was probably their version of a lay off. Except that they don't have to pay unemplyment this way. If it was just you, they were probably looking for a reason. I have worked for a couple companies that operated like this.
:stupid:
this is what my company does. If you give them a reason to fire you, they start reconciling your time sheets with your keycard. You can always tell when someone is about to get axed because they put out the infamous "time sheet accuracy" memo. They also fire people for looking at porn too, but that is it interweb wise.
This is also how they "lay-off" handfuls of peeps.

work is for chumps anyway.

Oh yeah, there is web anomizers, which allow you to surf without prying eyes. Web admins can still measure the amount of data you transfer (no movies, but text will not set off any alarms), but they could balk seeing you access anomizer sites.

Sorry dude. As a man who end up back in the bike shop because I was laid off while my boss was on vacation (thanks *sshole!!!), you got my sympathies.

As an ex-computer administrator, I understand corporate internet policies well. Frankly, internet access in the workplace is usually a distraction at best as well as a drain on resources. Intel, for example, does not allow external web access at the job.

The thing about surfing is that it looks like work. If whenever I started zoning at work I open a newspaper or wrote a personal letter, you know I'd be fired. That is the danger of web surfing on the job.

My old company, an lousy insurance company, blocked external email access (like hotmail, etc.), and at first I balked, but I quickly got used to it and left my mail to after work.

The reality about most jobs is that they really suck. I make this point about working a real job: when I am sitting in a cubicle, I surf bike sites. When I am working at a bike shop, I am not surfing computer administation sites...
finally some common sense, really surfin the web is equivalant to picking your nose, if i was a boss i'd fire you too. haha. :)
but being i'm in construction the dynamics of office work is lost on me.....

well, i dont think you can blame Biggins entirely. Blame the 40 hour work week. I dont know whose idea this was but it is ridiculous. A human being should never have to work more than 6 hours a day. 8 hours way too long & when boredom sets in that is when production slows. unfortunately we live in a sick & sadistic society.

well the only possible answer to this mess is 1) Proceed to office and take back every swingline stapler they own 2) proceed to torch the place and move to DH heaven. the third and final thing is to enduce a full RM boycot of Verizon Wireless curtesy of Biggins. You did work at verizon if im not mistaken right?

BOYCOTT VERIZON even tho catherine zeta jones is really hot and smooth, and british and sexy and oh god i just made a mess......

Doesn't she work for TMobile?

This whole thing reminds me of a woman at my last employer that got fired for surfing the internet. Turns out she was surfing local job boards, Monster, etc and making long distance calls to recruiters and such on the work phones. They too were looking for a reason to get rid of her because for some reason her productivity had dropped severely - busy writing resumes/cover letters I guess.

Biggins - head to Flagstaff.

40 hours?!?! I wish I could get away with only a 40 work week :( I haven't been in a professional/office job yet where I could get away with only 40hrs/wk for very long periods of time or you're seen as a "slacker" and "putting forth an effort" and all that crazy crap. I definitely think 6 hours a day would be the way to go!!!

Sorry to hear about your job biggins...best of luck in finding a new one!

Blame Henry Ford for the 40 hour work week. When the industrialized age first started around a hundred years ago, work conditions were horrid. Henry Ford actually found that the standard 40 hour work week kept the workers from getting too tired and that of course help productivity on the factory lines. Which he created as well.

E-mail and internet have made management & HR's jobs much, much easier when it comes to firing people. Just about every company has a written policy about personal use of company e-mail and internet being a no-no. Where I work, it's made pretty clear that it falls into the category of "grounds for dismissal". Happened to a good friend of mine who worked for a large corporation. Very smart, hard-working, capable person who just happened to have an ongoing conflict with her boss. She was called into someone's office, presented with an e-mail or two sent to her husband (along the lines of "I'll be home at 6:00, see you then....), shown the written policy forbidding that activity, and shown the door.

If I'm ever fired from my job, I fully expect the official cause of termination to be "personal use of company e-mail and/or internet". Welcome to corporate America in the 21st century.

i do seasonal work, right now i'm laid off for a few weeks. Summer is when things get busy in construction, so not the perfect time to jump in.

I had to fire someone once for his internet usage. He took his defensive driving course online (8-hour requirement) during work hours amongst other things (~800 hits a day to ESPN.com....) When I asked IT for record of his usage they said they coulod only get me the last year, if I wanted more it would take a week.

That woke me up. Everyone, keep your nose clean, they're watching.

Dam, that sucks. RM should have an option "quick, hide the page, the boss is coming" sorta thing.

Good luck finding a new job. Maybe destiny wanted you to find a better job that you will love a lot more than you're old one...

rm used to have a work theme that looked like excel :D . anyway, it wouldn't change anything since companies track you through their proxy server or firewall. (i'm glad i was in charge of the firewall at my company -- i rang up something like 500 hits to ridemonkey.com over 3 days. i reset it before i left the company, of course :D)
