The Falco thread got me thinking of the 80's.

Damn, those were some good times.

I lived in Oxnard, CA and we went to UCSB and down to Madam Wong's all the time. Heck there was quite a cool music scene at Charlie's in Ventura.

My friends became known as Toad the Wet Sprocket and The Primitive Radio Gods.

Those were some great times..

I went to the U2 concert at Olympic Stadium for the Joshua Tree Tour. Most awesome stadium concert I ever saw.

Got a freekin' speeding ticket on the way...

I did many, many shots after a show with Gene Loves Jezebel. They we're just sitting at the bar looking bored, so I said to an old girlfriend I was with, "let's go get 'em wasted", and we did.

This was cool?

Sonic Youth freakin rock. Moore used some really cool alternate tuning on the gee-tar. I love that band.

Ugh. The 80s brought us hair bands. And the "classic rock" stations are still playing that garbage. Cookie cutter crap. Makes me want to vomit.

Hell, disco was better than that bs, and disco truely sucked.

(With apologies to Eddie V, who truely is a god, and the exception that proves the rule.)

the only good thing the 80's brought us was groupB rallying (shame it didnt last into the 90's).
i'm just glad i was too young to remember the rest.

The 80's let me experience/miss...

Mike Watt abuse a bass like a redheaded stepchild.
Sonic Youth destroy my hearing.
COC apologise for $8.00 shirts.
The Bad Brains in the best arm pit of a club.
See Husker Du twice in a year.
A Meat Puppets/Henry Rollins show that was pretty amazing.
The Feelies in a field.
Soundgarden in front of 100 people.
The joy of Mudhoney.
Love Tractor marathons.
Missing the Replacements.
Camper Van Beethoven.
Missing the Cromags.
The shortness of Danzig.

stevew, i'd add in some UK-based essential 80s stuff too:

the deep brooding sounds of joy division and chameleons
the wide-eyed pop of new zealand's Flying Nun label, home to many incredible records
the best singles-based band of all time (The Smiths)
a maturing elvis costello (Get Happy!!, Trust, and Imperial Bedroom)
the dark psychedelia of the bunnymen (at least the 1st two records)
giant sand plants a flag for indie rock Neil Young followers everywhere
essential bands like The Church and the Go-Betweens help establish oz as a credible source of music
the Fall stretch out from their caustic roots (well, never completely abandoning them) and create their best record, _This Nation's Saving Grace_

there are TONS more examples...to dismiss the 80s as filled w/ hair bands, shallow new wave stuff, and other dreck shows a pretty much complete lack of knowledge w/ what actually went on...

No ****?? Those guys rock hard. :thumb:

Cant say much for the 80s.... Was born in 85. Represent

Back in about 86-88 they used to open for a Navy buddy's band call the I-Rails. I took some 8mm video at Pat's Grass Shack up in Santa Barbarba of the two groups playing. At the time the dudes from Toad were not 21 so they had to bail if the cops showed up... :p
