As some of you know I'm a cartographer (map maker)
Most of the maps I work on are boring directory maps that aren't fun to make or look at. So I saw an opportunity to help my buddy promote his race, me to promote my company and make a map that didn't bore me to tears.

While the map isn't perfect (the relief looks crappy because I couldn't find 10 meter DEM data) I think it looks pretty good and it was a hell of a lot of fun to make. We (my coworker Jesse and I) mapped the course by taking GPS readings every 2 seconds then doing some wizardry in Arc GIS. Illustrator for line styles and Photoshop for finishing touches. I also used a cool program called Natural Scene Designer for the relief.

Ohh yeah, the race is gonna be sweet. SB wine country the week after Sea Otter. XC, DH, short track, endurance, etc.

Check it yo!

Agreed, the web page needs updating, but that's a sweet map. Are there trail names?
Yeah, the web page isn't great, I didn't make it ;)

No trail names, its all private property and not generally open to the public.

Hopefully I'll be doing a full on Santa Barbara trail map, the one in the shops now sucks big time. I'll keep you all posted on the progress on that little project ;)

Nice map, Zark...I'm a land surveyor and my maps are not so visually appealing. In fact, I'm surveying our new local bike park this weekend, and was trying to figure out how to turn out something that's not just a black and white plan view.

Cool map. I am a geography major so I do love looking at and making maps. I also realize how much of a royal pain it can be. How long did it take you to do all this? I have no real suggestions other than perhaps eliminating or changing the north arrows, but that's just me.
