i don't seem to remember hammerschmidt cranks being north of $650 the last time i was looking at them....

Not to mention, with new 1X10 cassettes (36 tooth big cog) and 1X11 (42 tooth), plus clutch derailleurs, it seems to have made the Hammerschmidt design pretty moot IMO. I suppose if you're doing really long climbs, a granny may still be nice, but overall it seems a 1 by combo will suffice.
