That often happens when other electrical devices are turned on around it. Do you have anything big nearby like a large printer or a copier?

Nope nothing around it. Not eating, no other stuff. It was doing it much wose about 20 mins ago. But it's not as bad now....

In general our office air is pretty dirty. The shop is just on the other side of the door. Lots of welding and grinding etc. So all of the fan inlets on all of the office machines are pretty dirty.

Amazingly, our printer is like 6 years old and is still going strong.

Or a REALLY common one is a fan, like those little office fans. Go into the menu on the monitor and select the thing that looks like a magnet, it will make this cool noise, then settle down

Sounds like that could be related.

This sounds like where I work. I'm an engineer for a welding shop. It's so filthy here, we have to clean out the computers very often. Lots of strange things happen to the computers. I spent 2 days last week chasing cables connecting a pc to my cnc plasma table. Come to find out so much metal dust had collected inside the computer case it wouldn't communicate. Go figure.

Dust and dirt are your computers enemies. At the least a nice layer of dust will insulate the components causing them to run hotter. And in some cases, as you found out, it can make components stop communicating altogether.

The demagnetizing dealie is called degaussing, in case you see it listed as such on you monitor. CRT's do weird things sometimes. We had a doc complaining endlessly about the monitor having fuzzy lines. We replaced with brand new monitors, known good used ones and replaced the PC. Nothing would help. Turns out the BIG X-ray viewing equipment was causing interference. Go figure.

That's what I keep seeing.

It's funny because it's not really his mother that is dying, it's the monitor. If his mom really was dying then, no, it would not be funny.
