my wife just discovered our daughter's "secret" xmas / santa wish list... it includes an electric guitar (we currently have a FB marketplace freebie acoustic). must admit i'm not very knowledgeable in this space, so if i were to look into like a beginner bundle (guitar + mini amp), what would one look for and consider?

This is a solid beginner amp. 20 watts is plenty loud. Has a headphone and aux-in for silent practice. Should have decent clean and distortion sounds. Built in tuner is handy. I just suggested this to a friend for their kid and it was apparently well received.

Let me think on guitars. I’d imagine there’s a Fender Squier of some sort that’s priced nicely and well regarded. The bass Squiers allegedly punch above their price and are well liked.

good info, appreciate the input. bear in mind both my kids are under 10, so I don't need anything crazy fancy at this point (trying to keep to a reasonable budget). i'd be open to second hand as well, assuming i could find something that isn't clapped out and needs repairs.

I think a 20 watt amp and an 8” or 10” speaker will be pretty common on the new and used market in the beginner range. You’ll definitely want a tuner and need a cable. Looking for a headphone out and aux in should be beneficial for the parents, and common on newer amps. Older used ones might not have such luxury. Stay with a big name like Fender or Orange if you can. Plenty of Peavey gear should be out there. Amps will be the easier thing.

Guitars can be tricky. Cheaper ones can be hard to play and might not be easy to adjust. Older used ones have some risk in this area, but could also be just fine. My first guitar was an acoustic with high action and it was a nightmare to press the strings down. Getting a proper tech set up will be helpful but not exactly cheap. It looks like Fender makes a Squier mini which is 3/4 size and might be better for the small hands.

For $359 new this could be a tough package to beat, and seems to have positive reviews.

I recommend you find a guitar with a fixed bridge for beginners. (meaning no tremolo / "whammy bar") as it will be much easier to intonate and keep in tune, assuming a descent instrument. The Squire mandown posted ^^^ has a tremolo, but that could easily be blocked so it doesn't move. Looks to be a good beginner package deal.

Check out the combo package at the bottom of @mandown link here. 3/4 size, 10 watt amp. Name brand enough to not be terrible, but might require a shop to "set up". The first amp I played on was just a little 5 watt Orange travel amp, and it was loud enough to damage the hearing of anyone in a small space, though the sound distorted in not a good way pretty quickly. IMHO finding a guitar that fits/proper set up will be the biggest thing in keeping the kids interested. It's just like a bike, if it feels terrible to ride, you're not going to ride it and it's wasted money.

Mini-strat bundle is the leading candidate.

This has now also evolved into possibly/probably including electronic drums for my son too. He's in a percussion ensemble of sorts at school too, so that should be right up his alley.

I had lower budget one a few years ago and it wasn’t too bad. I’m not sure what the market is like now. Probably plenty of big sample libraries to make them sound pretty good and easy to upgrade.

Local independent music shop near my office (where I had my aunt's clarinet serviced before the start of the school year for my son) seems to be able to order said mini strat. I will stop by to investigate further this week or next. Would be nice to support a local small business, plus they'd be able to set it up correctly too.

took a trip to the local music shop. had the mini strat in the first color choice in stock and strung, even swapped out 3 of the strings as they looked worn from being out. wound up going with a mustang LT25 amp, sound was way better than the frontman i had initially been considering, plus it has a bunch of preset effects which my daughter will love. they had both amps on the floor, so i'm glad I shopped in person to hear the difference.

While I have zero to add on which guitar to get, Sweetwater is from here. Place is fucking wild. Show room is any musician or music lovers dream. Chuck the dude that founded it and I believe still owns it is a pretty big local philanthropist. He donates a lot to local music programs and a few green way initiatives. While they are a giant, I wouldn't feel bad supporting them.
