NORWAY, Iowa - Cattlemen are hoping to raise a better bovine with beer. About a dozen eastern Iowa farmers have been spiking their cattle feed with beer. So far, the herds are lapping it up, said cattlemen Robert Miller.

They like it so much that they hesitate to eat when their feed isn't mixed with beer, Miller said.

Fisher said research shows that beer has vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carbohydrates and proteins, which all benefit cattle's diet.

The animals' complex digestive system breaks down the alcohol in beer, turning it into food energy, animal nutritionists said.

Hmmm... drunken cows. Wooot. Wooot. :)

Actually, I don't think they will get drunk (from what I know of thier digestive system)
Ruminents (multiple tummies) do not actually use the stuff they eat for sustinance. The grass that a cow eats is fuel for a "brewery" in their stomachs. They have bacteria and stuff in their stomach that digest the grass, and the cow either lives off of the bacteria or off of the biproducts of the bacteria. One of the biproducts is probably alcohol, which they probably digest, or find some way to eliminate.

"Chewing is the first step in processing the feed. This is no small task as the cow makes 40,000 to 60,000 jaw movements per day as it chews and rechews regurgitated feed. Then it passes down a 2 1/2 to 3 foot tube called the esophagus into a large fermentation vat of 40 to 50 gallon capacity. Here digestion of feed goes on by 500,000 billion bacteria and 50 billion protozoa living and multiplying there. These small organisms have several unique characteristics which allow the cow to thrive in situations which would be impossible for other animals to live. They digest fiber found in hay, silage, and pasture for energy, make protein from nitrogen, and synthesize B vitamins for their host, the cow."

but their last stomach and small intestine works like ours, so they do use the stuff they eat that isn't, er, "pre-digested" by the bacteria for sustenance to some degree.

in any case, i agree that kobe beef is delicious, even at 5k yen per plate :D

in da shed, mon, in da shed
At least there is finally now a legitimate market for Busch, Strohs, MGD, PBR, etc. Does feeding a cow the pisswater make the steak taste cheap? Where does a guy have to go to get a Guinness-flavored steak?

I think they've gotta give them bovines spacecake as well. Beer, pot and steak in one package. It's a winner I reckon.
