am I going to have to buy a special brake cable/housing/lever for it? I have XT brake levers now, if that matters. I understood I could use the same levers, but I'd hafta get a new, totally enclosed cable for the disc brake - is this true?

You would need a cable with a outer that runs from the lever to the stop on the disk brake caliper.
