Well, my 93 Cherokee (which I bought for $1,000 more than two years ago) is starting to get a little over the hill. She's now got nearly 200,000 miles and she leaks a little oil, gets 14mpg, and in general is getting a little haggard.

My initial thinking was to buy a small 4 cyl pickup that would run forever...but the thing about new cars...I cant fix them. Too many wires and stuff.

I have had good luck with my last two jeeps.

sounds good.

even though i´d rather have a toyota as a main car.
Yeah, that's the thing. See, this has to be my daily driver. Luckily this is a later model Cherokee/Wagoneer, which actually has the inline 6 4.0.

My friends dad bought this jeep off ebay and flew to PA to get it. Says it get 22mpg on the highway.

Looks like this, except nice BROWN color and no graphic on the side:

Aren't those like the original SUV's? They predate Bronco's...

Anyways 3 large isn't bad for that low of mileage and if it's been kept up.

Plus if it comes with that grill you can tie up a bunch of stuffed animals on it.

now that i see the picture (i was thinking about the 4L boxy cherokee), the price strikes me as kinda steep.

i guess you are set on getting a truck/suv. given that toyotas trucks arent cheap, maybe another lower mileage jeep would be right.
i doubt a 97-98 jeep would get worse mpg than a wagoneer.

or maybe a toyota echo would be an appropiate car.
and keep the $1000 car for whenever you actually need to an suv. (after that wagoneer, dont have the nerve to tell me you wouldnt drive an echo now).
the echo never break down. i had one for years. never missed a beat, my other cars would always break down, leak, rattle or downright explode... but the good ol´echo never let me down, and 35+mpg arent something you can argue against.

Nah, doesnt have the brush guard, but Im pretty sure I could hit a horse with it and it wouldnt hurt the car. Thing's a tank. Supposedly it was owned by some old guy who never drove it. I mean, it'd be tough for me to find a newer car with that mileage for under 5k, but newer cars tend to last for more miles overall...
It's such an awful decision. I may regret it either way, but its so nice.

Im NOT driving any damn echo:biggrin:

I only have about 5k to spend on a car, and Im not financing one. I will never finance another car.

Gas prices are a concern, but they arent my main concern. Main concern is functionality. Ive got MTBs, a Canoe, a dog, tools, you know...I need something with some hauling capability. I camp pretty often.
Right now the Cherokee I have gets the job done just fine, but her days are numbered. Man, its just such a classic and Ive always wanted either a jeep like that or a Scout...

I know a japanese pickup would be the safer option, but truthfully it only has to last 3 or 4 years. Im talking myself into this. Dammit.

DA BEARS.
Go for it- you can do most of the work on it yourself, its only has 40000 miles on it it should leave you trouble free for the next few years, and its badass.

what exactly is wrong with the jeep??

is it so fatally wounded?
maybe you could get away with fixing the car if you like it so much.

Sorry, I meant the wagoneer is the classic. Not my POS.

There isnt anything horribly wrong with it, but at this mileage, u-joints, engines, altenators...it all starts to go bad soon. Ive already done the water pump, radiator, thermostat, etc. within the last year. Ive also replace the rear main seal in the engine to stop leaking oil and a few other things. Its just a very used car that gets uglier every time I look at it.

Sounds like a good deal, but a Toyota FJ60 would be a much better truck and nearly as cheap IMO.
Ok, please point me to a FJ60 with similar mileage for a similar price. It doesnt exist.

...and it really isnt a much better truck, and the parts arent nearly as easy to find.

It's too much. You can get a XJ from a gubment auction with less than 100K for a K.

On the other hand a dude is selling a 77 Cherokee with the 401 with more miles, but new Swamper Boggers and a Warn 7000lb winch, for the same $. If didn't just purge myself of Jeeps I would pick it up.

Sheesh. Just get it.

It's too much and while I like them, they ARE tanks - they weigh 5000000 lbs and get the worst gas mileage ever. Plus, the suspension is what is expected from such an old vehicle and the turning radius blows.

YOu can do a lot with this rig. I was looking at getting one in the two door, with a little work they can be killer. If you're not going to buy it, let me know where it is and I am going to pick it up.

if it has got no rust, it sounds like a screaming deal.

i dont know jack about jeeps, but if it is still carburetor-fed, you could prolly do a cheap-ish TBI swap and gain a little efficiency and cold weather driveability.

the FJ60 comments were teh funnay.

they made them from 1963 until about 1989 I think. either way it was a super long prodution run and almost all of the parts did'nt change during the entire run.

their cheap tho put a lift in

I belive they almost all had dana 44 axels
