Deportation is the resolution of this "problem". You don't pay taxes, you don't deserve our education. Goodbye.

It's not that they wont accept her (colleges are generally known to admit people known as "exchange students", I went to college with quite a number of them). Her issue is that she can't get federal funding to go. 4.09 GPA and she can't figure out that she could apply for private scholarships?

Also, it's not like she hasn't known about her illegal status all along. Perhaps she should have spent some time getting that straightened out? Not that it's an easy thing to do, but it's not impossible.

No, I still say we deport her. The Feds have her name, school, and parent's empolyment. That should be good enough for three deportations, and two heavy fines for employers knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. Oh, and iirc, there are laws against aiding foreign nationals from illegally residing in the US; who at her school knew?

An evangelical Christian, Castro would ask the campus Christian club to pray for her situation, the request couched in vague terms so as not to let on about her status.
"dear lord, don't so much forgive my sin, but make it not sin.

oh, and smite teh snitches, m'kay?"

"I know there is a God, and I know he's my father, and he loves me, and I know he has a great plan for me," she said. "He's opening doors for me that I can't open by myself."
don't let it hit you on the way out

So we're not going to let someone who is a very smart, well-educated person to go to college and become a contributing member of society, including paying the taxes that come with that education/high-paying job when she graduates. Instead it'd be much better if she picked strawberries for $100/day off the books and pay $0 in income taxes.

Way to go Conservatives, killing our tax base one person at a time.

Yeah I hate smart people because they're mexican too.

I can't think of a single self entitled natural born american brat who's ever gone to college and blown away their parent's money to become fairly useless.

So therefore I hate her.

Without having all the facts at hand, I think a scholarship would be appropriate, see kidwoo's comments. The whole illegal immigrant brouhaha is a crock - open the borders.
so i'm inferring "open borders" to be in effect like crossing state lines, where you have
- no background check
- no need for assimilation to our culture
- no sovereignty
- no mandate for ID

i can see a case being made for expedited entry or visa approval, but wanton erosion of our borders makes so little sense. at that point, citizenship would seem both arbitrary & unnecessary.

have you thought this through?

Actually, as an airline employee, the fact that shes not involved in avaition shows that she is indeed smart.

On a serious note though, any chick with a 4.09 gpa ought to be able to figure out how to 1. get a private loan, 2. get a student visa, 3. become a legal resident or some combination of all three. I don't have much sympathy here. To be whining about a the federal gubmint not supporting you when nobody in your family supports said government is absurd. These issues have been beat to death in the Arizona thread I realize but this is the opposite side of that. When republitards point to the ills/sense of over intitlement by illegals in this country this is exactly the sort of isht they are talking about. Hispanc/immigrants rights groups need to take this chick out, roll up a newspaper, hit her in the nose with it and tell her "YOUR NOT FVCKING HELPING!!!"

4.09 GPA and can't figure out how to pay for school?

Some part of me is thinking she really isn't that bright, but the other side sees this as her opportunity to get some bleeding heart group to dump her a ton of money to get a degree.

Either way she will be three bills after her first of thirty kids.

I didn't want to chime in on this, but:

1. Her parents are low paying manual laborers. She is not getting a $120,000 loan.
2. You apply for a visa from your consulate, back in your home country. But if she goes back to Mexico, there is a strong possibility she will not be able to return to the US.
3. Being an illegal immigrant isn't like being over the speed limit. There is no way for her and her family to apply for American citizenship.

I know trying to convince people on the internet to be sympathetic is a waste, but this isn't some gangbanger, but a decent student trying to get ahead.

What I would like to see, since she is in ROTC, is a military-citizenship program.

"It was a funny angle!"
How do you guys know her or her parents don't pay taxes?

It is a common misconception that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes. When I was a dishwasher at a restaurant I saw all of the guys that were illegal (probably 50% of the staff) receive paychecks with stubs. Their wages had witholdings, medicare/aide, and social security tax deducted just like mine.

I saw this in the many jobs I have had throughout high school and college where I worked closely with a large immigrant population, mostly undocumented.

I thought this may have been completely anecdotal and came to find out that it wasn't.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2008-04-10-immigrantstaxes_N.htm

My other comment about creating productive members of society through education have already been said so I will skip that. I will add that we have to face the fact that this girl is here to stay. She can either get an education or graduate highschool and work at the barber shop with her mom and crank out a village of little vatos that will be a further strain on society. Now the fact that she wants to go to Berkley is her problem. She should go to the community college for 2 years and then transfer....save $60K.

I knew a guy who cleared $100K+ a year and claimed about $30K to the IRS. Should his kids be yanked out of school or given a bill along with their graduation gown?

Those strawberries aren't going to pick themselves, you know.

<edit> When I lived in Woodburn, you could buy a Social Security card for $20 at the bus station. Most of the folks there needed one so they could get cable

They not only paid taxes and SS, but they couldn't file a return because it wasn't their number (some dead guys? I have no idea how they got the numbers).

My guess is if some dude was making $30k a year, paying taxes, then couldn't file a return, he likely pays more into the system than someone who makes 3x that much with considerable deductions.

I understand this and it goes back to the points I've tried to make in the Arizona thread. The fact that its so hard to immigrate to this country creates situations like this. Her parents are busting there asses and this chicks an honor student who wants to study politics at Berkley, yet the retarded immigration laws this country has have made it almost impossible for her to do so. This is exactly why real immigration reform needs to take place, and not the closed border/sniper tower reform the Ku Klux Klan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Klan-in-gainesville.jpg" class="image"><img alt="Klan-in-gainesville.jpg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/af/Klan-in-gainesville.jpg/300px-Klan-in-gainesville.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/a/af/Klan-in-gainesville.jpg/300px-Klan-in-gainesville.jpg people are talking about.

And she would graduate with a mountain of debt and get a nice job at Starbucks with her fancy, yet worthless degree.

Maybe if she had a real major...

wanted to circle back to this:

i realize she's applying for fed'l loans, but are you aware of what's been going on in CA since the days of gray davis? that is, do you see the liberal economic policies of the state in which she has enjoyed residency doing anything approaching fiscally responsible? i can't imagine it's the result of conservative think tanks who dole out welfare w/o end just for the asking, over-regulate (& therefore chase out) business, runaway spending, ridiculously lavish retirement/benefit pkgs of state workers...

are these not valid points when addressing the over-burdened tax base?

Many illegals are victims of employers who take out the withholding, pocket it, and never report the employment to the feds. (Among the myriad other exploitative employment practices involving illegals.)

That said, deport any and all known illegal immigrants, immediately. Every. Single. One.

Focus enforcement against employers, but don't ignore known criminals. Reform immigration laws, but don't ignore known criminals.

Deportation is NOT punishment for a crime. It's restoration of the proper legal order. It's escorting a trespasser to get off your land. Punishment for a crime would be imprisonment for the felony offense of crossing the US border without permission.

Do not reward illegal behavior with federal benefits.

Do prosecute those who hire illegally. But until there's immigration reform and real control of the issue, it's nearly impossible to hold any employer accountable for employing illegals.

Edit: Yeah, does suck if your parents bring you to the States illegally. They made a pretty stupid decision, so I'd take it up with them...

That's nice, but what if she's got younger siblings who were born here? You want to deport the whole family, and make the kids wards of the state?

That birthright citizenship is a bitch, ain't it?

Yeah, that's part of the immigration reform that needs to happen, alas, the amendment process isn't ever going to take care of that one.

Guess the kids can go to Mexico with their parents...? Why's it my problem, or anyone but the family's?? They're the ones who made the mess. Let them clean it up.

Oh, wait, Mexico only advocates immigration OUT of Mexico into the US. Hmmmm.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt the Obama admin pass a bill that made pretty much all student loans go through the government. Pretty much eliminating the private industry for educational loans.

Not trying to flame but I think that would make her situation pretty much impossible.

Yes, yes it does.
Strawberries need picking? How about some legal, regulated, background-checked, non-exploited guest workers making at least an established guest worker minimum wage? (And in a perfect world, not having kids who automatically become American citizens by virtue of mere geography??)

Thats a good point actually, I'd forgotten about that. I wonder about scholarships in this case. Surely a girl with a GPA like that is getting at least a couple of them?

The UC system costs a boat load on money and the US tax payer is to foot the bill? I went to school in California and went to Junior collage and then State. These options are much cheaper. She will have to work and not get a free ride but hey she got that already.

abortion does a good job of that.....
Lol, right, because every abortion in this country is performed on loving, rich couples who could afford to send their children to get great educations and be productive and tax-paying members of society.

It never happens to poor, unwed, single teenage girls who's chosen profession oscillates between welfare and "would you like fries with that?"
