The stat's don't lie. As crazy as it seems up front, there is no other way to explain nearly half the drop in crime otherwise.

Didn't read the other posts, but go for it. Even if you hate it, you'll be a better person for having experienced two years of teaching in American public schools, and if you love it you really can shape futures. You will have to get used to the fact that in a class of 30, 10 don't need you, 18 won't change, and you'll make a difference for 2 of them. But that's pretty ****ing rewarding, once you get over writing off more than 50% of them.

i taught for a couple months (not kids exactly, more like teenagers who barely read and didnt know much math). my dad also taught to read and write spanish for a few months, way back in the day, and says, in hindisight, it was a very wise decision to do so...
funnily enough, my dad taught my maternal grandmother how to read and write...

Interesting thread. My dad did that. 3 years ago my dad, who recently retired, approached the local school district (Lenoir City, TN) that he would volunteer to teach one class of high school algebra. They told him there was some bs state law that prevented “teaching” by a volunteer, so they paid him $1. Now he runs the only high school pre engineering program in East TN. He got several $100k grants for 25 PC workstations, rapid prototyping machines, industrial robots, CNC machines, tech sharing programs with UT and UT Chatt, etc. It’s really ground breaking stuff for such a depressed school district…..all from a “volunteer” teacher.

Very interesting and really not eye opening for our family. The whole “benchmark” testing and all that is crazy here. If you’re interested in teaching it would be worthwhile to see that.
Teaching science would be a noble engagement indeed. Not easy, but increasing the number of people with at least a basic understanding of science would be quite worthwhile.
It seems to take really good teachers an average of two tough years to figure out how to kick ass.
