Bye-bye Democratic Party!

http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/442047p-372286c.html

Congressional Democratic leaders recently demanded that Bush begin withdrawing our troops this year, regardless of events in Iraq. They called it a "redeployment." When I said that redeployment was another word for retreat, a top party operative disagreed. He said, earnestly, that Dems favored keeping about 35,000 troops "in the region" as something like a police force. "We could go back into Iraq if we had to," he said.

This is fantasy. And that's what Lamont's victory is based on. That somehow we can pull out of Iraq, tell the terrorists they win - and we and our allies will not suffer any consequences. And if those Islamists misbehave, well, we'll just scoot back over there with our police force and arrest those naughty fellows.

Helloooo N8? You think you still have the remotest chance of 'winning' in Iraq? It's already over. You've lost. You've already retreated to the capital. You can't even hold that together. To coach it in your pathertically childish terms 'Terrorists win'. Get over it and try and figure out a way to stop the world laughing at you.

While I was completely against the invasion. People have to understand that we can't just go into a couuntry, obliterate it and then leave it in chaos. We have to stay there until the job is done and they can take care of themselves again.

I do resent our leaders for putting us in this position though.

EXACTLY - this is why the Dems are going to make themselves obsolete, their big campaign is about the invasion of Iraq.... TOO LATE, we're already there!!!

The only way the US could possibly do that now is with a far, far, far greater force on the ground. You know that is not going to happen. It's not even an option.

Whilst I agree with your point in principal, you no longer really have a choice. Bush has failed. Have you seen the latest casualty figures? Despite the renewed focus on (withdrawal to) Baghdad, they are higher than ever.

Maybe the best thing the US can do now is leave, appologise, and hope the world cares enough to help undo the misadventure.

I'd completely agree with you if things were getting better each month/year...

Here is a slightly more realistic proposition:

Good article, made me remember that i totaly have forgotten about the Kurds.. A people of about 21 million which have during the whole 20th century been effed over by colonial/super powers. They haven't been alowed a country of their own because a majority of them are communists... and of course that would eff up the US/British control over the oil.
They have been force to live divided in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, but worse, they have lived under severe dehumanizing conditions in Turkey, where 2000 of their villages have been bulldozed, and gassed in Iraq.

Cut from the BBC article:
"The Kurds of the north and the Shia in the south would become the masters of Iraqi oil, leaving the Sunni Arabs an impoverished and alienated minority.

Partition would tempt outside powers, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, to intervene.

Some of those advocating a three-way split are, like Mr Galbraith, strong supporters of the rights of the Iraqi Kurds.

But what is good for the Kurds is not necessarily good for Iraq as a whole.

Mr Galbraith's arguments may also be based on a misreading of Iraqi history.

He writes of a 'coerced unity', suggesting that Saddam Hussein imposed unity on an unwilling nation."

One could question what is Iraq and does all its inhabitants still see them selves as Iraqi's? That is what is essential after all?!!

You know it's got nothing to to with the people. That is just pseudo reasons to make the occupation look good..

The rest of the world can already see how big it really is. It'll be healthier in the long run if you can get Bush to stop using verbal viagra on your internal perceptions.

You break up Iraq into three pieces and you proably have Turkey invade from the north.

Decisions, decisions...
Quite possible, and the centre section may be squished too. And the bottom section might become part of Iran...
