Giant STP, Specialized P.1 or P.2, Eastern Thunderbird or Nighttrain (maybe cheaper if you can get last years model on clearance, the new ones are expensive), Blackmarket .357.

Avoid bikes like the Mongoose Ritual that come with an RST Space fork.

... and then the DK Xenia--hard to beat $600 for an all-4130 chromoly complete.

2008 DK Xenia - $640.00 - On Sale for $600.00 with FREE SHIPPING

Pronounced (Zeen-ya) the DK Xenia is DK's big bike built with a BMX mindset. We took our BMX experience and applied it to a chromoly single speed hard tail that's fun to ride on and off road. This new 26" includes a 100mm travel fork and a mix of all terrain and BMX componentry.

Look at the eastern night train. A 26" bike will be more forgiving. So if you case a jump with your back wheel, or land a little crooked, it is easier to roll out of, and hurts less usually, than with a 20".

On the other hand, a 20" bmx bike (not race bike) will make you a smoother rider, and you will learn a little faster. They are also cheaper, and break less generally.
