I'm not the smartest network guy

I have a router and I have port forwarding setup for remote desktop

3389 > Internal IP
connect from remote location, bla bla

Now I added another port as I'm changing my security for remote desktop because I'm paranoid someone will steelz ma filze. So I setup port

3899 > same internal IP.

Now like an idiot, I have both of these ports enabled. So I guess that's why I can't connect now?

Easy now, I'm not a network guy.

What you should do but I'm not sure your router supports it is a port translation so that

external 3899 > router > 3389 internal ip

Alternatively, you would run RDP over an alternative port, this requires a registry change on your home machine, details here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759

and then when you connect remotely it looks like this in the RDP client
<homepcname>:3899

and the connection is
external 3899 > router > internal 3899

Thanks, I'm familiar with the procedure. I'm at work now and I was in my machine and added the other forward 3899 > internal IP and now I can't connect even to the standard port.

Is this because I have two ports forwarding to the same address?

3899 > internal ip
3389 > internal ip

Like and idiot, I disconnected for a bit before I changed the registry and all
that.

It shouldn't be, if traffic comes across either port it should forward it to the pc at home. If you're trying to connect on 3899 and it's not configured on the desktop at home yet that could be the issue but you should still be able to hit it on 3389 unless you have the machine in some limbo state where that isn't enabled either.

Yeah, I did not do anything to the pc yet.

I'm using the router of the wireless westel / verizon modem. My linksys wireless router went kaput the other night. I guess you have to buy a f'n linksys ever 6 months. I have 4 dead ones in my basement. Think it's time for another brand. So I changed the verizon/westel one from bridge back to router and setup port forwarding, but I think I screwed something up.
