So, I'm designing the lighting for a show at my school, and they use Vectorworks. I decided I wanted a copy, so I started researching it. All I need is Vectorworks, renderworks, and the spotlight package. I found a few student software sites that had it for $300-$400. Too much for me, because I'm a cheap bastard.

I called them directly, and asked if they had student pricing on Vectorworks with renderworks and the spotlight package. They said they only have student pricing on the Industry Collection, which is all Vectorworks packages together. This retails for $2,049.00, so I figured it would be waay expensive. When he told me for students its only $195.00, I said, SIGN ME UP!

Gotta always ask companies for student versions. Most have them and most are much cheaper. Actually one of the few companies i ran into that didnt was altair with its hyperware packages.

Icky.

I don't know how Vectorworks is nowadays, but I hated it for lighting work. I was inducted into Autocad for lighting, and it stuck. Much better utilization of object attributes and layers for lighting plots. And plotting is easier.

Might be much better now though, this was a few years ago.

Here's a link to some models, if you want to import 'em...

My old boss put that up.

yeah, I've used some old versions, and they are not that great. The new one is supposed to kick ass though, and, it is the industry standard afterall...

I don't know about those packages but Solidworks provides 2 licenses for each software suite so you can install it on a work computer and on a home computer at no additional charge. If the school has paid full retail for one suite you may be able to legally install thier software on a second machine for home use.
