As I'm sure being an apologist for the administration makes you feel better.

No, I'm not being an apologist. I'm saying straight out that we should lessen our oil dependence period. I feel bad that we are destroying the Canadian wilderness, but apologizing for that does not make me an "apologist." You need to learn what words mean before you use them.

True, and I'm sure that greed has nothing to do with that decision:rolleyes: , but that doesn't absolve the fact that oil dependence is harming our environment (maybe to the point of no return), harming us politically, harming our ability to conduct foreign policy (we must abide the Saudi Arabias of the world), and could lead to a huge fall in the future is oil wells dry up or if we somehow can't get the oil we need.

Obviously you haven't donned a loin cloth, taken yourself off the Grid, abandoned your automobile, and stated producing your own food...

Just donning the lion cloth and being sorry ain't going to cut it...

N8, your trolling powers are weak.

it's not an all-or-nothing deal; if everyone started to use 10% less energy, rather than 10% of the people using 100% less energy, it's a lot more of a realistic proposition, no?

but you aren't much into that socialist-type of concept, are you? you'd prefer for someone else to pitch in for you?

What did I tell you about saying something intelligent or trolling elsewhere?

We've already had this discussion. Erasing one's ecological footprint by 100% (only really attainable through death) vs. not doing anything are not the only choices, nor is that representative of reality. Since we've already had this discussion and I've already explained to you what all this means, that means you are either being disingenuous (at best) or being an outright nitwit and/or bald-faced liar.

So, to sum up, stop trolling this thread.

Personally I can't wait for the day when Hydrogen becomes a primary fuel source for the world. Actually the day when the mid-east realizes this, and sh*ts themselves with be far more interesting.

I'd like to have a serious discussion here. This is an issue that concerns me and I'm sure concerns a lot of others here, including a lot of our Canadian monkeys.

I don't understand why you would come here seeking to derail this thread with your assinine comments. Like I said, contribute something intelligent or go elsewhere.

Well, since charity starts at home... what exactly are YOU doing to reduce your drain on the world's resources? And, FYI, talking about it doesn't count.

Hey- you cats are funny- Locally, many of my friends have been using biodiesel to fuel thier autos. A small company called Footprint Recycling makes biodiesel from used restraunt fryer oil. With gas prices so high, the stuff isn't much more expensive than reg. gas.We can also get biodiesel at two other locations, the Renner station and Real Goods. The only problem is you need a diesel vehicle to begin with.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
What's the point of this post?

Dear World,

We are sorry that we have screwed the planet over. We take full responsibility for your horrible lot in life both now and in the future. Hopefully we will be better in the future but its unlikely. So World, why don't you sack up and do something to stop our rampant and unmatched consumption. Quit giving away your natural resources for trinkets and beads. Quit giving away your environmental stability to satisfy our needs.

But hey what the hell do we know? Just keep on like you've been keeping on and we'll do the same.

Sincerely,
The US

Is that what you want?

Cool! These cats stopped by locally and the news did a story on them... and they are not a half bad band either:

Rock Band Visits Shreveport on "Green" Bus

The up-and-coming band The Constants is on a two month U.S. tour. It recently stopped in Shreveport. A converted school bus is its mode of transportation. Lead singer Will Benoit says, "we left Connecticut like two months ago. We spent two weeks working on this thing like every day for about 14 hours a day". Benoit says they went under the hood, converting the bus to run on vegetable oil. They had to make several changes. Benoit says, "basically all we had to do was install a second tank and run a second set of lines up to the engine". Benoit continues saying, "diesel is really expensive. Driving two to eight hours a day and with this giant bus, there's no way we could afford to be on the road as long as we are now". He points to the additions under the hood saying, "these are the fuel lines, the veggie lines are back there".

The vegetable oil tank sits inside the bus, which makes for fragrant journeys. Benoit says, "when it runs it smells like french fries in the back, and pad thai depending on where you get the oil. It's free, we go to restaurants, talk to managers. We use their waste vegetable oil". The band does more than play when it's on tour. Benoit says they have to find their own oil, strain it and filter it by hand. And says it can be a messy and gross job. But Benoit believes it's worth the work saying, "an hours worth of work gets us however many hundred miles". The tour remains pricey, but Benoit says the veggie oil saves the environment, and keeps The Constants" budget constant.

The band says the bus gets between 10 and 15 miles per gallon, depending on the quality of the vegetable oil. The Constants" are on their way to New Mexico, and make their way back to Shreveport in July.

I specifically said that Canada using their natural resources to get money from us doesn't absolve us of our responsibilities. I'm not blaming other countries or saying it is their fault that we are a bunch of greedy bastids.

Maybe we could have a serious discussion about things we could do to alleviate these problems.

Two things that can be done:

1. Cut the population of the world by 80%

2. Have the remaining 20% live in the stone age

Maybe you should. The US has shown time and time again an unwillingness to change its habits. Should the World sit on its ass and wait for something to happen that has never happened before? The US isn't going to change its habits until they are forced to do so. But as long as the other countries allow THEIR own greed to overcome what's right don't get your hopes up.

Or you can sit around and talk about how you are going to drive less, in a more fuel effcient car, using energy efficient light bulbs and thinking how much more superior you are for having ZERO effect on the problem.

The only way folks change their habits, especially when it comes to fuel consumption, is by making the pain of change less than the pain of staying the same.

Oh... just for the record, I have been directly responsible for saving nearly 20 BILLION BTU's of energy...

Saving or not wasting? Not necessarily the same thing.

Either way, better than using so well done. Still no reason to be a jerk about someone else pointing out environmental destruction.

is that really true? why do some people recycle, carpool, or otherwise try to reduce energy use, and some don't?

it always amazes me to see the relative amount of trash cans and recycle bins on my street; some people have one trash can and two full recycle bins, others have 3 full trash cans and no recycle bins.
