Since I sometimes will go weeks without noticing announcements, I thought I'd make a thread that might get more notice...

Please read...
http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/announcement.php?f=&a=37

I do this cuz I have seen a few of these errors and know for a fact that these posters *cough*rabbit*cough* :D meant no malice, but as BV said, you screw up, ya gotta pay the price.

So, if you monkeys will PM the poster about it immediately, maybe a whole lotta stress can be avoided?

Granted, if someone is being an intentional tool, then yeah, "report" it ASAP.

Thanks Opie.

The biggest problem I see is that monkeys browse from work. Hot linking certain images could result in getting, at the very minimum, a lecture or a warning, and worse depending on the circumstances.

Problem is that nobody bothers to check if they aren't held responsible. So... everyone just go through the extra two seconds to follow the steps posted and we won't have to hire snipers.

I hot link every so often. I always paste it in a new browser page to test it before posting. Maybe not the best way, but I don't think I've ever had a problem.

stinkyboy gold always comes from Photobucket.

I think I understand. What is to stop a site from replacing an image later under the same name??

So basically we can only link to our sites or sites that reputable people never change?? Right?

That's not really the concern (though it is a valid one). It doesn't happen all that much.

What happens more than that is the site detects the fact that their image is being linked from a page that's not on their site, and they have their server intercept the image being requested and replace it with something else. So you're requesting to view www.site.com/image1.jpg and the server sends you image2.jpg instead.

What BV said.

However, I have seen a few sites that have a ".../potd.jpg"

In other words, it's a Picture Of The Day that does rotate out and the next day can be something completely inappropriate, so that is also something to be aware of.

I think that happened to me a few years back... boy was Echo pissed :D

My wife is a chemist with a lot of geeky, international lab people. One time some guy from a weird chat thing was linking to one of my pics to a group of, lets use "uncool" looking chemists, people to illustrate his negative point "(something about internation dinner geeks I think), . Well, I found his info page and was going to change the pic to one of him with a worthy caption, but I didn't want to risk it going to the next level now that I have a family (but back in the day, bring it!:) So I just took the pic down.

:busted:

I re-read that FIVE times and couldn't figure it out. I was sure that it was cuz of THREE glasses of wine.

But it took only ONE post by you to realize that maybe I'm not that drunk.

Sorry guys, got new healthy baby and one toddler up puking last night. This will be more coherent for those interested.

If you have a web page, you can see what is being viewed and what IP's are viewing/linking it. Once there was a guy linking to a picture of my wife and some of her eccentric friends at a dinner. I traced the link to a dungeons and dragons chat site that used the pic as an example of international american geeks. Not finding this context amusing, I researched the guy who posted the link to my picture.

I was then going to use his picture modified creatively by me on my website and simply rename it the file he linked to. Therefore when his thread says' "here's an example of an international geek convention" his fellow viewers would see a not so flattering picture/text of him.

I scrapt the idea in case he was psycho and would retaliate by finding my home address. So I simply took the picture/file off my site.

So, anything you link to on a site, say one of my videos, I could change by simply putting a different video in it's place under the same name. A retro active hot link if you well.

Better?

In the cleavage of the Tetons
That happened to me with a thread involving Austin Bike (on bikeMojo). Whatever image I had intended to send was replaced somehow with one of really, really old men having very graphic sex.

I felt pretty bad, and was quite confused at the time.

I am glad there is an explanation.

I gave up hot link for golden banana.
I dont mean to steal the thread, but what exactly is the "golden banana"?

Also, to get back on track, by "hot-linking" do you mean pulling up the properties menu on the pic and copying the link to the picture into the little microsoft clipart symbol thingy?:imstupid: Sorry

Last Wednesday, I apparently hotlinked to an image and got the old innappropriate porno switcheroo and got banned for the week. :busted: To anyone whom may have seen it (I didn't) and was horribly offended (or not ) please accept my humblest apologies.

BTW, I am almost certain I did the preview / f5 thing, it's just a habit now. It must not have worked or maybe :imstupid:?

Hey jd, take a look at my PM. F5 doesn't do any good without holding down control, since F5 just looks for changes in the page code and updates if there are any. Control-F5 does a real page reload.
