I'm going to get either a 2003 LX or XT crank.
At jenson.com and many other mail order company they say the LX can only be used with the new ES-51 BB which uses a plastic cup and does not have anti corrosion treatment like the ES-71 which says it can only be used with XT.
The ES-51 only comes in 68x121mm and 73x121mm my frame uses 68x113mm. The ES-71 comes in my size but i would like to buy the LX crank but i want the ES-71 BB because it won't rust like all my other BB's but they say these aren't supposed to be capatable do any of you know the truth.?

the splines are all the same, so it should work....and if you took your bb out every once in a while it won't rust :D

But it is a c-dale, the frame will break if you take it out too much:D

Thats not a joke it's the truth.
But my last BB was only in there for like 2 months.
The reason it rusts is C-dale puts their shift cables underneth the down tube, they drill a hole in the bottom of the BB cup to hold this peice of plastic which the cables slide on thats how the water gets in i think. When i get my new BB i'm going to stick the peice of plastic with silicon.

How can i find out about the BB and Cranks capatibility?

almost all companies do that.....or atleast companies that run the shifter cables on the downtube. my old IF got some rust in the bb but if you take care of it and treat it properly it won't be thte case of the bb getting stuck.

Install the BB w/ plenty of waterproof grease, like Phil Wood, etc - ALL over the thing. A thin layer all over it will keep the rust at bay.

Another trick is to install w/ plenty of grease first and then spray some WD40 down the seat tube and through the down tube hole via the head tube. WD40 sucks as a lube, but it rocks as a rust inhibitor (sp?)

The new Jekyll routes the front derailleur cable differently (housing all the way underneath the BB instead of that stupid plastic guide) so maybe they learned something.

As far as compatibility, I'd trust Shimano's website rather than trying to get the info from Jenson. Jenson's a decent gang but I'd bet the correct info is on Shimano.com :)

No. Your frame uses 68mm. Your current crankset uses 113mm. The '03 LX cranks are designed to work with the spindle lengths that are offered, obviously. Get the 68x121 and it'll work perfectly on your frame, with the LX crankset.

The reason for the incompatibility is that the splines on the new LX are much deeper, iirc, than the old ones.

Cover the BB in tons of grease and it won't rust.

If you MUST use the ES-71, use it with a set of '02 LX cranks. Those, along with all of the splined XT cranks, are compatible with the ES-71 (the es-71 is the same as the es-70). Essentially, it works like this:

ES - 51 - fits '03 LX
ES - 70 - fits '01/'02 LX, and '01/'02/'03 XT
ES - 71 - fits '01/'02 LX, and '01/'02/'03 XT

Stupid shimano:angry:
So i have to use the es-51 with the LX were did you find that out sub6?
But the XT and LX 03 look like they have the same exact arm but they use different BB. So maybe i'll just get the ES71 BB and and last years LX that would fit for sure right.?

I emailed jenson they say the Es-71 will actually fit contrary to what their web site says.
They also say that the warrentys for sram is done by them so if it breaks i call them and they give me a new one.:D

I would recommend the 2002 lx cranks and es-70 BB instead. I have had much better results with the es-70 BB than the es-50. You are forced to use the crappy BB if you buy 2003 lx, whereas with 2002 you can use the better BB. If you are set on 2003, xt is the way to go. I think 2002 lx is the best deal around though. Shimano fixed their screwup by making things incompatible for 2003.
