Between a rock and a hard place.
Democracy has survived 228 years. Don't underestimate it's strength.
It'll take a lot more than an election on our own soil to harm it.

Honestly the difference between Presidents IN office is negligible. If you look at the actions of presidents, legislation signed, orders given etc w/o names attached you'd be hard pressed to identify which party was responsible.

Or will it be democracy that gets 'Own3d'?
hhmmm, maybe he was reffering to some non democratic convention of deciding the election, Like maybe the supreme court or congress decides, that sounds like democracy being "Own3d" to me

Would you consider the US to have been truly democratic during the height of the Jim Crow laws? The US has survived for 228 years but Democracy only rears its head on occasion.

Oh ferrchrisakes..... get a grip, take a second and imagine the alternative.
You've got it so good in this country that you (and sadly millions like you) have lost sight of how truely blessed you are to live in this country.

The mark of greatness in either Nations or individuals is not how they act when things are good, but how they grow from the bad stuff. This country has had it's fair share of dark moments. But without fail it has, as a whole learned from, and grown from the event and become stronger for it.

If you don't agree you either need your head examined or you need the phone number for a moving company.

I don't think 228 years is all that long...and I think we're a little too arrogant and self-assured of our own continued existence coupled with world dominance.

The Romans never thought that a bunch of 'mere barbarians' could one day sack the city. Even at their most decadent and vulnerable state, it was simply incomprehensible, because they lived with an illusion that they could never be beaten, simply because they were Roman. I think that's something we forget here in the US. We're but a historical blip on the radar...a big one, but who knows how long we'll last? We need to tread carefully at all times...complacency kills.

As a rule, I would agree, but there is one notable, recent exception from 'learning from his mistakes'...

You can't learn from a mistake until you are through making it.

This whole thing hasn't played out yet. There is a chance that the whole thing works out and GW comes out smelling like a rose. Probably not, but it could.

Anyway, when you have the ability to look at an event from start to finish and examine it you can learn from it. Involvement usually prevents that.....proof...speeding tickets. You always know you shouldnt have done it, AFTER you did it, but never while.

Exactly, this country has had it's share of dark moments. The key to preventing the dark moments is to recognize past discressions, not reflect upon our history like a one liner from a motivational poster. My coments don't mean that I "hate America", I thank my lucky ass every day that I was born into such a place and by no means do I take it for granted. It is not a black and white world.

And I am getting my head examine next week, been suffering from headaches an blurred vision.

Yep, it's a nice place, but not everyone in this country has it as good as you, Mr. Happy. It's ok to admit it can be better for everyone.
Hey, I don't think everything is perfect here.....

( Id really like it if we weren't dependant on foreign oil, but right now we lack the technology to eschew the stuff and the greenies won't let us drill a hole in Alaska.
Id like it if we could develop better alternative power generation systems. But technology is a bit behind, and the labor unions from that industry have a strong lobby against govt funding for research.
Id like it if I didn't lose close to 40% of every paycheck to taxes. )

......but it could be way worse.
