Will USA Cycling provide race specific info like attendance, competitors, etc.? I know that they are all incredibly busy ... doing whatever is is that they do but I'll bet that's someone's job there.

USAC will provide you with License numbers only, they have no way to tabulate race attendance. Well, they can tell you race entries-etc.
I do know NORBA membership in 98 peaked at 35,000 members, there are now 13,000.
I also know I have my HYUNDAI "win a car" forms at every event for the last few years at my GT booth and those numbers have fallen drastically...for example where forms used to be in the high hundreds for an average event (well, sea otter is thousands) I got a total of 74 forms filled out for Idaho, Aspen and Durango. Now this is a quick form to fill out where we choose a random winner of a Hyundai Santa Fe or Tiburon!
74 forms for 3 nationals! wtf??? I think I got about 15 in West Virginia. This is not good at all and is reality. No one knows about these races, not even bike enthusiasts. The series needs a PROMOTER not some glorified construction workers running it.
Anyway, I dont know what you are working on, but contact BRIN (bicycle retailer) for industry stats (which are growing) and contact USAC for racing stats. Try Andy Lee at USAC alee@usacycling.org he is one of the communications guys there, he can guide you in the right direction.

Adios

Stik,

Thank you, I appreciate the post. All I know is that yes, the sport does need to be promoted from within the industry, but as far as looking for money in it...well, it's sort of like a small pot of chili for a party of a hundred people, and I'm no where near the front of the line. I'm better off bringing a lunch from somewhere else....

That may not make perfect sense but my point is I think the sports cool and marketable. I also think that enough people pay attention to it that people within the sport are marketable to people of similar demographics...if not, I'm just going to try and put some lipstick on the pig and try and sell it anyway.
