INS out of control?

Jesus, does it get any whinier?
So 30 hours in detention, forced to sign a request for a withdrawl of your visa, without reason since his papers were in perfect order wouldn't make you whiny?

I would be very interested in hearing the other side of this story, but I find this man's version quite plausible.

I have often wondered, what happens to the airfare costs in these situations. Say he spent $1000 on airfare and then was denied entry. Who covers that cost?

My guess would be he's out the G....that's how things work 'round these parts.

I beleive it's on the Airline actually. They have a duty to ensure you have the proper documentation for international travel. However in this case they seemed to have done that, so maybe the taxpayer is stumping for it.

I know if you are turned back at immigration (rather than detained) the airline you flew with has to initially cover the costs of returning you home. I guess they might try and get the $$ back from you though.

"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah. They called me a mexican"

Do you know what happens other places in the world? I highly doubt the guy's paperwork was perfect and they decided to detain him anyway.
Think about. Who are the laziest ****ers you know? That's right! Government workers. Why in the living hell would they give themselves ANY extra work?

Yes. People are civil to each other, and don't treat others like criminals straight off the bat.
Have you traveled much lately?

Ever travel to South America or the middle east? My father did work in Saudi Arabia in the late 80's... said he's never go back there due to the way they treated him.

I don't recall this in the linked article. Pop culture reference?

Who knows? Just because they are lazy does not mean that they may not also be incompetent. Maybe they thought they were doing the right thing and then when the "boss" showed up and saw the underlings had made a mistake he made the guy sign to revoke his visa in an attempt to save face.
Obviously, this is just crazy  speculation. Like I said, I would like to hear the other side of this story, but if the airlines were responsible for checking out his passport in advance and then they are required to forward passenger manifests to the US, where do you think the funk-up occurred?

Ok, first off, you can't refute a crappy forum post with another crappy forum post and proclaim victory.

Secondly, it's pretty common knowledge that a criminal record makes it hard to travel to the US or Canada from either country. You can do it, but it usually involves waivers and the like.

Third, the Brazillian guy (let's assume both stories are true, just for fun) had a visa. Captain Freeride didn't.

I was just pointing out that its not all lollypops and sunshine like Changleen likes to pretend. That happened to pop into my mind as a first-hand example and ON TOP was even MTB related. I figure thats worth something.

The brazilian guys story seems to be a re occuring theme with the INS.
here's what Russell a freind of mine said of them after traveling to the states to go to foo camp (computer nerd conference).

It wasn't quite the first contact I would have desired. The man on the immigration desk didn't seem to like me. In response to the usual opening question, I told him I was in the United States for a conference. He looked at my two-year-old "I" visa, which said I was a journalist, and decided that both statements could not be true.

"It says here you're a journalist," he said, eyeballing me. "Why didn't you tell me you'd be doing that?"

"Well, yes, I'll probably write some stories, but I've been invited the conference as a delegate" I said.

"But you'll be there as a journalist."

"No, as a delegate. But, yes, I'll be writing some stories about my trip."

"You say you 'will' be writing stories now," he said, pouncing on a target only he could see. "See, you've changed your story already. Do you know it's an offence to lie to a federal officer?"

I really didn't know what to say next. Eventually, after one of the most confusing and pointlessly hostile verbal exchanges I have ever endured, he stamped my passport. What the **** was that all about?

Fortunately, immigration man was the only American I've met who wasn't upbeat, polite and friendly. Even the security staff manning the endless security hurdles in stuffy, sweaty halls were pretty cool. The heavy manners of a fearful security environment are inescapable at the airports. Photocopied A4 sheets are sellotaped to doors with the news that the "threat level" has moved to "orange". A honest appraisal of the recent scares would suggest that the "threat level" has not really changed at all, and that a good deal of the shaking-down is arbitrary and for show, but, hey, it's not my country. It's still hell of a relief to not have to be anywhere near an airport for a few days yet.

what kills me is why we are such dicks at the border? If someone wanted in this country they would do it and probably not thru the traditional means (esp. since sept 11). Mexicans manage to come in all the time without having passport/visa or anything else, it seems logical that that terrorists would go the same route.

I travel and have travelled frequently and extensivly and have travelled to most parts of the world, although admittedly not much in South America other than Mexico. I have never been treated anything like that story. Not even slightly close. Even when people ask a lot of questions, they are still civil.

Canada's immigration people are dicks too. The difference is that they aren't usually clinically retarded like the INS people are.
Last time I went to Canada (from the US rather than a direct flight) the Border guy did ask a lot of questions, and was very interested in car insurance for some reason, but no detention, no suggestion that we were criminals...

Plus most of the cargo container that enter the US are not searched.

I mentioned this in another thread - but the Rio Grande in El Paso, TX is 10 feet wide and about 6 inches deep. Not very hard to get across, hell you could probably do it w/out getting your pants wet!

There are so few boarder patrols, it's like no one is there. When the border patrol does catch someone they are obligated to take them in for processing - even though that means no one is around to watch the border anymore. The smugglers know this - they send in scouts to see if it is clear. If the scout gets picked up, they wait 20 mins and then just walk across.

It's harder to do go back and forth legally than illegally. And this is not something I've read... I've been there. These images I took of the "Rio Grande", and a few guys I saw coming across...

Did you kick their ass and tell them to come in legally? I sure as hell would of chewed some ass....even if they didn't speak english (typical american, I only speak engrish).

The other thing, a bit off subject, is the threat portrayed with respect to terrorists and planes. Around 90% of cargo that airliners carry (they ship packages for UPS, FedEx, etc..) is not scanned and it is pretty easy to find where you package is going. You could do a timed bombed or remote detonated. I will search for the article on it so everyone doesn't claim I'm full of sh**

Could be a different story though if your traveling on an American passport.

I have heard storys of quite a few Yanks who try to pretend to be canadian when traveling to have an easier time from the locals...... :clue:

Its funny you mention this....both my grandparents on my moms side are from Ireland and I'm in the process of applying for my citizenship thru their citizenship. This will give me an EU passport. Part of the reason I'm doing it is for ease of travel.....this way I can talk funny, drink a crap load and people will think its normal and that I'm cool
