Installing grips on a carbon bar???

This has almost certainly been asked before but I can't find a satisfactory answer using search, but what's the best method for installing grips on a carbon bar? I've heard that you shouldn't use locking grips on carbon due to the possibility of cracking the bar. Is it back to hairspray (or whatever)?

Thanks,
Mike

I've used ODI lock ons for years on my XC bike with Easton carbon bars. Just don't hoss down on 'em, and you can't really without stripping the little hex bolts. The inside of the clamp is really smooth which prevent's stress risers from forming.

If you use standard grips clean the bars with isopropyl and wet the inside of the grips with it. They'll slip right on and when the alcohol dries they'll stick.

Why couldn't you use lockon? You clamp the brake lever and shifter on the bar. Most carbon bars are reinforced at the ends and even allow the use of barends. The big thing is not to twist the shifters/brakes on. You don't want any scratches especially that go around the bar.

Lock-ons work fine. Scratches are only a concern if they are deep enough to cut some fibres. Most carbon bars have a fairly thick clear coat to protect the fibres below. Same thing for thinwall aluminum. Deep scratches can form a stress riser and lead to breakage. Generaly carbon is tougher than aluminum. But it is softer and more easily abraded.
