Hello Groovy People,

I just got some 29 inch rims and - I forgot to ask for some rim tape. Can I just use some electrical tape, or perhaps small pieces of duct tape between the tube and rim? The edges of the nipple holes in these rims are fairly "sharp".

I would use two layers of electrical tape.

I use hockey tape instead of rim tape; even at the shop.

I ended up using 1/2 inch strapping tape from 3M. It seems light enough and much tougher than electrical tape. I doubled up the tape where the tube stem pokes through.

nylon strapping tape is the best low cost rim tape going, it will last a long time but can be a pain when it needs to be removed and replaced. You will likely have to pull the strands off one at a time but it's not a big deal.

For insurance you can run a swivel-headed deburring tool around the sharp holes.
