I've been looking for this info - but for some reason cannot find it and have not reached the owner of a frame I might be trading my PX pitbull for. Does anyone know if the Surly instigator will take a 24" rear (with canti's)? Also - thought I'd throw this in - anyone interested in trading a solid FR hartail of some sort for a PX Pitbull w/ Fox Vanilla RLC 125, PX tubular cromo cranks, PX LMF rims laced to PX (front) XT (rear) - can give the rest of details if anyone is interested, just in case the deal on the Surly falls through? I love the bike - but I would like something not quite so compact that I can take to the skatepark OR on trails, should I feel so inclined.

No, I don't think so. There is only one position for the canti bosses on the frame. I don't think you could run canti's or linear pull brakes without some serious jerry rigging.

the instigator is a good frame for bombin with from what i've seen...however it would NOT make a good trail bike simply because it is a terrible climber...for a good dual duty type of bike i'd look more at a PX jack flash or their armadillo frame...IMO MUCH better than the surly...i must admit tho that i really wanted one myself for a long time until i did a lil research...if you do get one tho you have got to get the orange color....sooooo hot!

The Surly is, geometry-wise, an XC bike with stronger tubing. Good for rough trailriding and not much else, and not the best-constructed thing on earth, either. I liked mine until I ovalized the HT (running a 4" Jr T).

the surly ride nothing like a xc bike. it rides nothing like a fr bike(but most like an fr bike). it is deffentally not a urban bike.

i had one and it just was not for me. other people seem to really like it though

Really? I thought mine pretty much felt like a heavy XC bike. But then again, I was riding an 18".
