Hi,

I have a chance to get a used 2001 M1 which looks to be a pretty good deal, are their any specific areas I should check on the frame for cracks or other potential defects etc.

Someone I knew had one of around this era that developed stress cracks around where the headtube attaches to the lower part of the monocoque section.

M1 = good for super-smooth sponsored racer boys, but not so good for your average DH'er.
Bull, total bull. Watch this average DH'er mop the floor with you for that one
:p

kidwoo}Don't buy that bike. It will fail in one of the above mentioned places if you ride it on your average dh terrain with any regularity.[/QUOTE said:
Yes, they can crack, so can ANYTHING. I cracked one this year, but mine was not a typical production frame. Its been all good sine I got a new front end.

DIRTWRKS, look around for a later model M1 that uses a 5th, it makes the bike pedal a ton better.

Hi,

Can the shock from a 2002/2003 be retrofitted on to a 2001, I beleive that the 2001 had a shorter stroke and length..... which is why it only has 8" travel ?

It can be fitted, you'll need a 8.75" eye to eye shock with 2.75" stroke.

Look here for mods:

Hi,

I just got an email back from the techs at Intense and they it can't be done since the front triangles are different for 2001 vs 2002 .......... the 2001 was designed with only 8" travel in mind ? Not sure how valid that is but maybe it will upset the geometry somewhat and that is why they won't edorse it ?

Yeah, in addition to being a different size shock I think there's also the factor of the larger reservior on the 5th coming into contact with the seat/mast area on the older frame. If I remember Intense can do some kind of reworking to have it fit. I could be off a bit though, that was a while ago.
