so mi lookin at gettin an m1 trade for my turner xce. i love doing shuttle runs and whatnot but i also love gap jumps and drops and things of that nature. will the m1 be a good candidate for this?how are they durability wise? i know they are fast as hell but that all i know.

I would find something else if you're going to be doing a lot of drops. That is one particular action that will hone in on one of the weaknesses of M1s.......a tendency to crack along the headtube welds. They also suffer from cracks/full on breaks around the heat affected zones at the dropout/seatstay junction. From what I understand there's also a lack of availability of replacement parts from Intense these days.

I really like the geometry of them but durability is the one reason I'd personally stay clear and go with another frame if doing a lot of hard landings is your thing.

Just be sure to ask if it's been raced for a season. Because once riding is called racing..............whoooooboy, that changes everything.

I'm with Kidwoo on this one. I don't know Gee's deal but it might not be that hard for him to get a new frame or parts when needed. Yeah he rocked it out at Rampage but a pro riding at that level is a different animal than your average dude learning big stuff.

M1s are lengendary for good reason but in my opinion they have been surpassed in performance, durability, price...er, just about every category (and hey, even Intense is going in a different direction with the M3). Plus like lots of dh bikes they get used and abused pretty hard. Personally I'd stay away from buying a used bike with known durability issues, especially if you plan to risk serious bodily injury riding the thing...

Gee will most likely get a new bike every year or every time he breaks one. On the other hand, an average joe will not likely get a replacement M1 every year.

I snapped the headtube off a '99 M1, very scary. But, Intense said they redesigned the headtube area after 2000 because this was a common problem.

As a rule, I'll never purchase a used DH bike again. Too many factors that are out of your control, unless you know the history of the bike.

M1s also want to break on the upper chainstays quite a bit. I guess those would be seat stays, but since they dont connect......ah.....nevermind. Its a race bike dude. Not a hucker.

I own a 2001 and do DH and freeride stuff on it. I'm not dropping huge drops on it but I do do some drops, most of the drops I do have a nice smooth tranisition, so if you're in to going big don't get it. It's a great bike don't get me wrong and I love it. I just wish I had a bike that I didn't worry about bouncing off of rocks as you decided to crash.
It's wickedly fast at Whistler. It's great at Sunpeaks too. If you like speed get it. If you want to ride stunts and do tech drops get a Norco Shore.
I find myself more and more liking the speed aspect of my riding so it suits me right now, however every now and then there's a nice skinny that needs to be ridden and would suit something a little less racey.

I snapped the headtube off a 2001 which they refused to warrenty or send me a crash replacment for. It was brand new

As an owner of a M1 I'm not too worried about it's durability. I haven't had any issues with it. It is more a DH trail/Race bike by design though. You can huck on anything you want to, just some bikes are built more for it. I look more at who's racing what, and who's hucking/dropping with what.

I know Intense still makes crash replacement's for the 02-03 frames. Upper + Lower chainstay's are $600 I think? Mainframe is $600. Their customer service is what gives them the "I don't think they are supported" feel.

I dunno about a monster and avy out back. I know the 2000-2001 design likes the avy's, but 2002-2003 that had 5th elements rock. I run a Shiver up front on mine and have no issues.

This isn't from a fellow monkey is it???

no, m1s are not good for anything other than DH. the frames are relatively fragile and cannot handle real big hits. my friend dave has absolutely obliterated his. derailleur hanger broke off, broken bolts everywhere, thing sounds like a tin can riding down the trail. thats just the monocoque frame though. if you wanna hit up large drops and gaps and stuff of that nature look elsewhere.

Kyle Strait back in the day was hucking a M1 on for some movie with Robbie Bourden and I think he did one of the Red Bull Rampages and it seemed to hold up fine. He was killin it in the movie... as a matter of fact I was whatching it yesterday and he was dropin pretty bike... maybe 20 feet to smooth trannys but he might be special? i dont know anymore!

I have an M1, and the bike is definately a racing bike first and foremost. Because of the geometry, the bike sits fairly long and low so it may not work as well as some other bikes when it comes to "freeriding".

Also, the frame isn't the stiffest out there. From what I have seen and heard there are some folks out there with M1's that last through years of abuse and there are others that have breakage problems. Basically a coin flip. The way I look at it is you need to ask yourself if you are willing to take the risk. One thing is for sure though. The M1 is definately a fast bike.

All right I'll chime in. I'm a recovering Intense slut, who been jaded by their excellent customer service  The bike is fast and really meant for one goal, getting down the mountain as fast as its pilot is willing to push it. Hucking is not its goal, but a DH course can have some big stuff.

Freeriding mean different things to different folks in different places.
If you mean riding skinnies and teeters and general shore stuff I don't think its your top choice.
If you mean grinding a little climbing to do some gnarly trail, get ready to push.
If you mean general DH stuff with some drops thrown in it'd be fine...probably.

As a DH bike I love mine, despite cracking the headtube of my lightened "race" frame. The new front end has been fine. Geometry and great suspension make it a great go fast bike and thats what I love. Would I get another one? Hell no, I'd pick up a brand new Azonic Recoil with the same design and rail it :p

I beat on Inclag's M1 frame for a couple seasons with no problems. And it still seems to be holding up fine under him. I did a lot of things to that frame that it wasn't "meant for" and it never complained. Maybe it was just a good one.

well, like, duh! yeah. the bike i have now would handle it if the brakes worked and the shock bushings were destroyed and the head tube wasnt gonna snap off. know anybody that has a dh/fr rig they wanna get rid of and would consider a trade for a super dope turner xce?

I'm serious. I'm tired of explaining to all the mountain bike geeks what a pit bike is.

good work man

We would race pit bikes at the local BMX track after the motos were done and before the main. What a blast...

Back on the subject, you can mess around with the rear end of the M1 to give a shorter wheel base. When I spoke to the guys at Intense he said that he didn't know anyone that ran there frame with the shorter wheelbase setting, however with the tighter trails here I thought I'd give it a try. Works well for me. Makes the rear end about the same length as the Bullit I was riding before and the wheel base is only about 1/4" longer, though that can be reduced by making the head angle steeper. I tried that but didn't like the feeling of the higher BB.
Basically it's pretty adaptable.
It is a wicked bike for going fast on. I was railing Whistler on it a lot this summer and took a trip up to Sunpeaks near Kamloops with it, it was at home of the techy singletrack there. The favourite run of mine had super twisty steep sections, fast berms, a big road gap, rough and rooty singletrack and a couple of drops in it. The bike was rocking it.
As for pedalling up hill... well I've fitted a 32t chainring and have pedalled it up the Northshore. Yeah it's heavy, but it pedals pretty well for grinding away for 45 mins.

Hmmm, I guess he never met me, I opted for the shorter wheelbase setting after just a few rides and its great. SB has tight switchbacks and it helps there.

I thought that it was a sweeping statement. I've not really tried the bike in the longer setting, maybe I should go ride Big Bear and try it there!

I agree, you can set it up pretty much to fit any style of riding, short/long etc...

I have no problems with mine in the shortest setting. Feels like the rear tire is right below my butt. The longer/slacker setting would be cool though if there were someplace I could go faster on then our trails here.

I'd just play around with the different settings. If you get a lighter fork on there (then my shiver) it should balance it out well. It's not hard to build one up as a high 30lbs DH rig, which is pretty nimble also. Too many choices :)

My friend, all I have to say is don't spoil your magncificient M1 with a Monster T!!!! It's way out of place on this bike. Stick it on a Bansheeeeeeeeeeee but not an M1 pleaasseee. My friend in north van did it for the sole purpose of riding Fromme but it really sucked in Whistler!!!

Good luck
