Mag 30... stronger and lighter.
You'd have to be stupid to buy Doublewides, they're reknowned (well on here at least) for being being the worst rim ever. Seriously, I ran a pair, and flatspotted both rims within a month. How you flatspot a front wheel, with 7" of travel, I do not know, but I did it. Just like Marzocchi DJ forks, heaps of metal, but all in the wrong places.

man my modo wheelset rules. the doublewide rims w/abba hubs. i have never ever ever had a problem with them and will never get rid of them. i have accidentaly hit stair gaps with 9 lbs of pressure in my rear wheel and didnt have a problem. i had to have the spokes tightened once in 2 years though. they are heavy but they are a wheelset for life

What about atom lab are they any good? Would the mag have any trouble running a 2.5 tire? The rim would be for the rear.

Avoid Atomlab, they're a crappy company, and yes, their rims are very heavy. A Mag 30 will have no trouble running a 2.5" tire.

I've heard first hand Mag30s are very stiff rims and if really punished they crack.

I'm eyeballing a Mag30 for my son's front wheel. He's on a Steelhead/DJ1. The wheels are XT hubs w/ solid axles and Sun Singletracks. He complains of flex in the wheels. He rides this thing on the BMX track, street, some DH and mtnx. Is there any other rims that are fairly stiff but not too heavy or pricey?
He keeps spouting about wanting BFRs but I thought they are BMX only sized. Is the Mammoth the same rim cross section?

Anyone have any time on MTXs? Sorry to semi hijack the thread.

If you kno anybody that has a 26 inch mag 30 rim for sale or a complete rear mag 30 I'd be interested in buying it

I'd be more inclined to think it's the build of the wheels moreso than the actual rim that determines just how stiff the wheel is. A well built, tight wheel is the way to go, and you can run a slightly lighter rim if it's built wheel. I guess that's the only advantage doublewides have, is they'll hold their true no matter how **** the wheel build is. Up and down though, hrm, well, suffice to say mine are shaped like hexagons. But they're still straight!

24" rear PIMP is pretty strong + HEAVY-it will dent easily if you come up short,it has tall sidewalls that i think contribute to that.
Going to try a 24"AIRCORP next on the back !
26" D-Wide up front & is holding fine w/o wobbles, even with the flatspot- but want to get something different up front soon that is lighter but also holds True great ??

i will vouch for the intense mag30. one time i hit it really hard. i mean crazy hard. i thought that after that hit i would not have a rear wheel. not only was the wheel "ok" but i didn't vern flat! when i say ok i'm still runnig it with a mid size flat spot. but like i said its not the rims fault at all. it also really stiff and dent resistant like all hell. if these rim crack i would be suprised. i know i when a little over board but these rim are the best rims i have ever used

yeah, the mammoth is a grown-up BFR, with a plastic strip. Unless they changed it, and knowing sun, they haven't.

My personal take is to go with the Arrow rims...heard only good things and they will go on my next wheels.

Mag30's and Doubletracks are the exact same rim, except mag30's are welded. I do not believe this weld does much, as I have caused it to separate on the mag30's i have owned. Likewise, I've had doubletracks separate slightly at the seam. Both are still excellent rims. Doubletracks are currently all I would run. The arrow rims are nice too, but here in Canada they cost a LOT and I can't really justify it for something that will get dented anyway.

I've had good look with Mag 30 in the past but this year I was not impressed with mine. I put 5 cracks in the rear rim, and can see signs of cracks in the front. I am going to try the new Hugi rims next year.

I've watched a new Mag30 crack in 8 places from a single impact. Still, I have yet to see any rim that holds up better. The Arrow rims seem to dent a bit better than the Mags/DTs. The Arrow I had dented quite a bit (any rim would) but showed no signs of cracking.

mags are awesome rims. ive had mine for over a year and nothings wrong at all w/ them. and mags and douible tacks have the same shape but there not the same rim. mags are lighter and are stronger and more expensive.

according to sun, the mag30 & doubletrack are identical in weight. the profile is definately the same. i guess the extra $$ is for the intense stickers...

I ride Mag 30's and had an issue with the weld cracking last year. All in all, I like the rims and plan to ride them again this year.

I have heard nothing but bad things about doublewide's. Not too many things have hung around from the 'make everything on a DH bike big and heavy as hell' era a few years back.

That's not true at all. The rims are identical weight. Only difference is mag has a "welded" seam.

I've seen welded Doubletracks. There seems to be a difference between aftermarket and OEM rims.

Thread starter needs to clarify whether he's considering doubleTRACKS (newer, better rim, supposedly the same as the MAG30, though I can't vouch for that) or doubleWIDES (old, fat, crappy, soft, heavy rim to be avoided at all costs).

Sorry, I'm Canadian ..sorry...
I run a set of welded Doubletracks on my hardtail, and Singletracks on my DH bike. I have to say both sets are in good shape after taking a season of abuse from me. I have to agree with Rik, that any well built wheel will hold up well. I've had no problems with flat spots, wobbles or broken spokes on either wheelset. The Doubletracks were hand built, the Singletracks came OEM on my DH comp.

I've riden 2 sets of mags and don't want to ride anything else. My first set(32 hole) took a year of stair gaps and drops to flat(shyt I was a sick rider :p ). That same set lasted a year of DH at plattekill(which isn't exactly nice to bikes). I handed them down to a buddy who cracked them within a week of riding them(but he weighs 250lbs and rides a hardtail). Since he's poor he continued to ride the wheel for the rest of the season. I don't understand how they held up but the wheel is still intact and is used as a spare.
The set i ride now(36 hole) are way beefy. I came up short on a really big step down(biggest thing I've ever tried to do) bent my azonic double wall bar into a shape no longer handlebar related, twisted and bent the shorty stem but my both wheels came out perfect! It was that day that I decided not to ride anything else. Well that and this season at plattekill with low pressure.

White doublewides all the way!
Haven't you seen Doubledown?Ha!
man i've got a tall stack of trashed doublewides!
I feel the Arrow is the finest, the mag 30 is nearly a copy of the great Arrow, which is very strong too.The Arrow however had a few benefits.1st is that they are the only rim mfg that leaves the weld fully intact,no grinding.2nd is that the spoke nips come out the side of the rim giving them a more direct path to the hub creating less stress on the head of the nip. This is especially benificial when using a 24.
