But privately, the soldiers say they are gratified to know that the A-10 pilot "owned up to the error" immediately upon landing the aircraft. In stark contrast to the 2002 friendly fire episode that cost Canada its first four casualties in Afghanistan, they say, this pilot is taking responsibility.

Been similar articles in the Australian press concerning the recent battles in Afghanistan, although fortunately no Australian soldiers have been killed.
Interesting article, thanks. Shame about all that pot though.
Another answered, "Hearts and minds? **** that. This is not peacemaking, this is a war for us." One soldier went so far as to answer "You don't," when asked how this war will be won. "It's like squashing an idea. How do you do that?"
wow.
this just came up (almost verbatim) tween burly & i.
so my gen'l question is: how many more of these skirmishes have to happen before schyte-or-get-off-the-pot is addressed? remember: nato forces are replaced just as quickly as taliban forces. maybe it comes down to "who's got the will?"

Afghans have a long and troubled history.... being invaded, repelling the invaders, being invaded, repelling the invaders, being invaded, repelling the invaders, being invaded, repelling the invaders... (rinse and repeat)
IMHO there is simply no conceivable way to "win" the current war, just as all previous invasions of their country have faltered and failed
It's a dam mess, for all involved, just as previous conflicts there have been.
i think when karzai & musharaf get into fist-a-cuffs it's to show "progress" for the benefit of both the u.s. & to save face.
after watching last night, i have a better appreciation for the effort in pushing back the russians. they really didn't stand a chance in that rugged & tribal region. i just wonder if we're paying attention to the mistakes they made....like taking them on in traditional tactics.
only difference i see is that we're using drones w/ hellfire missiles & then tell the gov't to take credit for it.

That docco didn't mention it all but Musharaff's main centre of attention is always gonna be on threats from over the border. Not that border, the other one all billion and change of 'em. They're the wild card in this, indeed on the whole "war on terror".
