Well this is certainly not the most scientific of studies but I thought I would share the information which I myself have just realized.
I have Cateye enduro cycle computer on my bike. I'm an Engineer by education so I keep a log book of monthy miles and repairs by the miles I have on the OD.
I have now gone through my third set of tires on my bike. How I determine that I need new tires is not by seeing them worn. It's more like running shoes for me. Once they get to a certain age they just don't work as well. Inthe case of running shoes the heel cusion is gone long before they wear and tear is visible.
The interesting thing I have found with the tires is that they all start flatting quite frequently at 750 miles or so. My last two sets of tires had no flats for the first 755 and 775 miles. Then as if on "Q" they start with slow leaks and general flats. I had 4 flat tires last week riding the same places I have for the entire 750 miles. No flats for the first 775 miles and 4 in one week. Then another very slow leak. I found that the black berry thorns will slowly work their way into an old tire and will not on a new tire. I guess it depends on the tire also, to a degree.
My first set of tires on this bike I rode 990 miles before the first flat tire. Then I had flats on a regular basis until I swapped them out. Funny how they might still look fine but the rubber must be getting soft or something?
I've decided because of this that at about 700-750 miles I will start swapping tires out now.
