So we recently had some new neighbors move in below us in the basement. Couple seems nice, and the guy is from eastern Africa, not sure about the girl. They cook the most offensive smelling food ever. Okay, not the most offensive smelling, but to my uncultured 'merikun nose it smells pretty assy. No prob with that, except the scent has started to bleed up into our apt. I can't just tell them to stop cooking, but I really don't like my apartment not smelling like me and like stinky food.

Anyone have suggestions on a fix/ridiculously strong air fresheners?

Talk to your landlord. Let them take care of it. But be aware. They may have the same problem with your cooking/odors.

Call customs and tell them that you have a couple of illegals living below you. I am sure they won't get deported but they might get pissed off enough to move

Ethiopian food rules. Get better taste buds.
Pretty sure he's Sudanese.

I think if we did anything stanky, it would go up into the apartment above us, not below, so I don't think that's an issue.

What can the landlord do? I don't want them to not be able to make their food...that's kind of ridiculous.

Is it coming up the vents?
We had some Filipino neighbors years back, same problem. We ended up finding some charcole filters for our vents, it took care of most of it.
You can also leave some open baking soda around where it creeps in, might take some of the funk up.

I used to smoke chiba openly and that offended them. I had no idea anyone else could smell it.

The landlord talked to them (and me) and told them they would lose their deposit and also have to pay for the apartment to be fumigated. That and since only 2 people were on the lease the other 5 people living there had to leave. We had to clean the empties closet and retire the bong.

Install one of these bastards into one of their basement windows:
Should be able to get a few air changes a minute depending on the size of their appartment.

Mmm, charcoal filters...I'll have to find me some of those.

It seems to be worst in the bedroom, which is nowhere near their kitchen, so I'm going to assume it's coming in through the vents. However, none of us share furnace/AC units...is the ductwork still possibly connected (eg cold air intake)?

Ya, cuz that's a great use of government resources that are already stretched to the limits.
