rape kits soon to be available

Starting next year across the country, rape victims too afraid or too ashamed to go to police can undergo an emergency-room forensic rape exam, and the evidence gathered will be kept on file in a sealed envelope in case they decide to press charges.

The new federal requirement that states pay for "Jane Doe rape kits" is aimed at removing one of the biggest obstacles to prosecuting rape cases: Some women are so traumatized they don't come forward until it is too late to collect hair, semen or other samples.

"Sometimes the issue of actually having to make a report to police can be a barrier to victims, and this will allow that barrier to cease, to allow the victim to think about it before deciding whether to talk to police," said Carey Goryl, executive director of the International Association of Forensic Nurses.

Oh yea, so some guy sleeps with a girl, dumps her, and she proceeds to collect "evidence" on her own to tie a guy to a crime. Or hell, she just rummages through his trash and finds a used rubber to use for "evidence".

That said, for rape charges to be possible, there'd have to be other forensic evidence that a woman was actually raped--signs/marks of violence, no? Semen is just evidence that a man ejaculated...

what forensic evidence is there for blackmail/extortion ("drive it like you stole it or i'll kill your sleeping kids"), or roofies, signs of which disappear rather quickly?

In all seriousness...

Rape exams where I worked were somewhat comprehensive. Hair, semen, skin samples. Photographs of trauma. The doctor who performed the exam would have to swear a deposition or testify as to his interpretation of the evidence in the kit.

Thankfully I'm not a woman, but I would think that talking to the police would be easier than having evidence collected from your body...

Thankfully again, I never had to interview a rape victim.

I'm talking about bruising/tearing and any associated defensive marks--even a completely passive rape victim will likely show some evidence of being involuntarily, well, raped. (As if there's a voluntary form of rape...)
