To preface, I'm an Apple guy, but obviously have a PC @ work. I just finished loading up my new iPod with all of my songs from my laptop, and I brought it in to work today so I could give a listen to all of my tunes @ the office.
The problem is that when I plug the iPod into the PC, it says it's not formatted, and iTunes wants to reformat it. This will obviously lose all of the music that's on there right now. Not the end of the world since it's all still backed up on my Powerbook, but still.
I want to be able to drop the music that's on my iPod onto my work computer, so I can listen to it without my iPod. Anyone? Toshi?
Is the iPod formatted differently, so that PCs can't read it?
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

JJames

the good thing is that if you reformat with the proper software (ipod updater? look on apple's site) on the pc then it'll work on both the pc and the mac in the future. you'll still have the issue of getting the songs off, and will need to use ephpod or the like.

So, to sum up:
If I reformat here @ work, on my PC, lose all of my songs (for now), then reload it at home on my Apple, it will be readable by the PC? I figured I'd need to get some 3rd party software to get the stuff off of it.
As much as I'd rather not spend another 4+ hours transferring the music back onto the iPod, I'd really like to have my music here @ work...

No, make sure you get the proper apple software to update it. The NEW ipods work on both. Then format it. Then reload the music you just deleted. Then crawl into the fetal position and cry like a little girl while you wait to transfer it all over.

Also, you can't copy music OFF of the ipod without special non-apple software.

Instead of making a new thread I'll ask a stupid ipod question here:

On my 30gb ipod video, there is an option on the main menu that appears to shuffle all the songs on the ipod.

Is there a way to just shuffle the songs in a playlist, or shuffle songs in a genre, or shuffle songs by an artist? :help:

I updated it last night with the latest iPod software. It's a 30gb Video, the newest (until later today probably) one out there. I just need to update it on a PC then? I'm ok with the time to transfer it back, and I realize that I need some special software to get it off, I just wanted to know how to get my PC to recognize it...
I'll try updating it, then going through the whole thing again tonight...

In the main settings menu, I have shuffle set to "songs" (shuffle icon appears below battery level indicator). When I start a playlist it shuffles the songs within that playlist. Same goes for if I choose a particular artist, album, etc.

An Ipod formatted for a Mac can work on either a Mac or a PC. An Ipod formatted for a PC will ONLY work on a PC (even the new ones). I know this because i have the newest one and it will not work on my roommates PC. What i would reccomend is format your Ipod for a PC, there is no additional software needed you will just need to follow the steps it tells you. That way you can still use it on your powerbook and your PC. Once you have your ipod reformated there are a couple of 3rd party software apps you can download to transfer your music from your Ipod to a computer. The one i use is called Senuti, but it is strictly for Mac OS's, and you would need one that runs on windows. Just do a google search and i am sure you will find what you need. Or what you could do, which may be easier depending on how much music you have, is just burn data discs and then use those to load your music at work, or even better data DVD's if you have a DVD burner.

make sure that you hit "play" when the playlist is highlighted. don't hit the center button then hit play when the first song in the playlist is highlighted, else you'll always start out with that song and will complain here on RM that your ipod isn't shuffling songs (as did IRB)

Screw Windows. I'm just gonna burn some CDs with the mp3s on there (thanks A.D.85). I was thinking about that earlier, but for the fuss involved, it's just not worth it to me. 4.5+ hours to re-transfer over my songs? Funk dat.
I am also disappointed that the wired remote I have for my 3G iPod will not work on my Video. It's like Shimano, keep changing the standards so you need to upgrade every couple of years...

james, if that remote works on a mini I'll buy it from ya.
I'm sure it would, but I have unfortunately (for you) given it to someone already. Someone with much softer and lovelier features than you (pictures of you in the Gascans notwithstanding).

Sidetrack: Are you coming out for Otter this year?

Haven't really decided yet, gonna depend on who needs coverage, shots and can pay the bills.
