Can I engrave a nmber or something on my IPod with out scrambling its brains? Trying to theif proof it a bit...

It should already have a serial number on it, no? Just write that down somewhere. I'm not sure how engraving something would "theft-proof" it? 
Yeah... you aren't theft-proofing it, just reducing its resale value.

Just drill a hole in it and run a chain through it.
About the best thing you could do to theft proof it would be to beat it up so that it looks so bad a thief wouldn't want to take it. Or you could buy an off brand MP3 player and nobody would know what it is, therefore they'd have no reason to take it.
