Australia is forging ahead with plans to filter Internet content in a bid to stop its citizens accessing obscene and crime-linked Web sites.

Under the Chinese-style system, Internet service providers (ISPs) in the country would be legally obliged to filter out banned material.
The move would mean more than 1,300 sites that show child pornography, bestiality, sexual violence or give instructions about committing crime would be blocked. The government says such a system would help protect people, especially children, from harmful material found online.
Outlining the plans, communication minister Stephen Conroy said an independent body would decide which sites should be blacklisted by being "refused classification" (RC) through a public complaint process.
VB won't be able to get his entertainment when he is home.

We have a couple of conservative fringe parties holding part of the balance of power in our parliament at the moment. Gotta throw them a bone occasionally.

Apparently anyone who opposes this is a paedophile.

Using the internet is a sad, slow experience in Australia.
It will be a sadder, slower experience soon... The Faux news quote claims 1300 sites being blocked, australian government claims over 10,000...

Thankfully, people who can't be bothered looking after their own kids (Exhibit A: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/internet-filter-to-protect-her-children-from-porn-and-other-horrors-gives-mother-some-peace-of-mind/story-e6frg6nf-1225810746442) can sleep easy..

There was a list floating around at some point, and it not only had legitimate businesses, but also sites like wikipedia.org entries as well as forums that *could* have something bad on them (4chan for example).

Don't worry, I'm sure that the American Taliban (GOP) will try something similar here soon enough.

Do you have a Parliament? :brow:
Small, fringe-group holding power and forcing things through that the vast majority disapprove of due to the fact that they're an essential part of the ruling majority in a parliamentary system? Say it ain't so!!

(bookmarked for the next time the "we need a parliamentary system here in the US so I can vote for someone who perfectly matches my viewpoint" argument comes up...)

Yeah, happens occasionally. Very frustrating, especially as a couple of fairly simple changes would greatly reduce it happening here.

Its not a perfect democratic system, but I'm yet to see any that don't have their flaws.

Anyway, we only have a few crazy conservatives floating around our gubmint. You guys got hundreds :)
