My Friend raised this question to me earlier in the week. I don't know the answer. I say its a coil over shock, he says its a strut. e-suggestions?
+ early proflex, early amp research, the specialized hard rock fs, that old manitou fs system with twin efc workings (or maybe the twin aspect means its not a strut? hmm)...MtnbikeMike said:I'm not exactly sure, but I think a strut is a combination shock/structural frame member, like the shock on the Maverick and Klein bikes.
i'm thinking it would make it plural, and maybe a fork could be considered as 'struts' as well. And i think the shaft itself on a damper could be called a strut in relation to the damper only.Toshi said:+ early proflex, early amp research, the specialized hard rock fs, that old manitou fs system with twin efc workings (or maybe the twin aspect means its not a strut? hmm)...
I don't think so, since there's not actually any sideloading on it (in either plane); it's a two-force member.zedro said:And i think the shaft itself on a damper could be called a strut in relation to the damper only.
You should re-read the above posts.. That's not what they said.SDminitrucker said:I think technically they would be struts. Like someone said a strut is an integrated spring and dampening system. Most rear shocks would be coilovers.

"Strut" means a member loaded in compression, but a McPherson strut is different to a gas strut or a strut in a structure.
Except all those pesky air shocks.SDminitrucker said:Most rear shocks would be coilovers.
hmm, then how do you explain some aircraft landing gear...those are considered struts no?punkassean said:A strut pivots at one end only and a shock pivots at both.
uhh...nome89 said:okay here is what it is in car terms. any stock suspension that comes on a vehical is a strut. meaning there isnt really anything special about it except it compresses and makes the car ride nice. no adjusment features or notin. it is basically a simple suspension system for the averatge car buyer.
a shock on the other hand is an afftermarket part. granted we call struts shock but they are two different things. also a shock provides tunning features and performance upgrades with it. which means the car or truck will performe better. so in this sense we have shocks on our bikes becasuse there are adjusment upgrades and performance upgrades that have been done or can be done to them. and also like punkassenen said a shock piviots at both ends which also increases performance.
is there an emoticon that shows one pulling something out of their ass?punkassean said:I don't know where you came up with that
