I am salary, so I am all for ending overtime pay as I get none of that. Make everyone salary and call it a day.

Same here^^^ as JD. Seems that many in the service industry (human services here) tend to classify their employees as 'exempt' to avoid OT costs.

Cantor might just be helping a few justify their actions. A friend of mine had asked a woman he knew out on a date. She (then) worked up here at the Serotta factory. Her response at that time was "Oh, I would love to, but i have to go back to Serotta and work some unpaid overtime, sorry..."

If Cantor had his way, he might be putting women like that in better positions to justify the 'downturn' and men like my friend would therefore experience less butthurt! :rofl:

And you also probably have a lot more control over your own work schedule. What would you think if you had to work 48 hours a week but since three people use your office in three different shifts you had to work 8 hours each week day and 4 each day on the weekend?

I would think I worked for Apple making iPhones.

I used to work a contract job that was paid hourly, but I could not bill for more than 40 hours (but if I missed any hours, damn...). I clearly worked more than 40 hours to make insane deadlines and was expected to make the deadlines. It bothered me less at the time because I thought $50/hr was a good wage, but the reality is I was well underpaid for the level of performance I was giving.

Most contracts in my industry pay straight time if they allow overtime, too. No 1.5x, just straight pay for hours worked.

Being military for most of my "adult" life, I do not undersand fully the concept of un paid overtime. If I was being paid hourly, and the boss told me to come in and work for free, I would tell him to come find me. I have had weeks (In garrison...) where I worked 120 + hours, and weeks where I worked less than 8...deployed, that another story in itself.
Cantor is simply sucking up to his corporate masters...

I am on salary...and I get overtime and all of that.

Unfortunately, there will always be abusers of the system.

In my last job, we were paid what seemed like a good hourly wage, yet we were treated like crap and had to work 10-12hr days, only getting paid for around 8-9 of those, or due to factors completely beyond our control (weather, maintenance, cancellations due to being sick), we made far less and sometimes nothing, forcing us to work weekends much of the time. A few times I had to put my foot down and I got results, but I had to be careful not to step on toes too much when doing it, and I couldn't get the situation really fixed at all.

The work rules at that job sucked, they even tried to make us buy new uniforms right after x-mas break, which was a month long affair where we basically made no money because the entire company was shut down for that month.

Mind you, we were considered "full time" employees, but held in an exempt-status which allowed them to tread us like crap. Exempt is meant for high-paying executive and professional levels where you aren't worried about giving someone their earned pay or a living where you can count on anything. No overtime. No holiday pay. No pay for work that we performed while we weren't in direct contact with a customer (so scheduling, paperwork, systems and data maintenance, meetings, and all sorts of stuff was not paid) and so on.

Point is, never underestimate how a company will try to treat you like the absolute lowest level of crap. It's the bottom line to them, the shareholder prices, and so on. It doesn't really matter whether it's salary or not, you shouldn't work people like slaves and shortchange them for their hard work.

I'm hourly, and I loves me some OT. OT is all gravy/play money and I take it when it's convenient for me, and only if it's convenient. If it was even suggested that I was supposed to work OT off the clock, I'd be getting a lawyer.

I recall when I first moved to Oregon I took a job at Intel working three 12hr shifts. I was paid 1.5 time for 4 hours every day to make up for sub 40hr work week, plus got paid a little more for working the night shift. There were both volunteer and mandatory overtime days based on deadlines, but overtime days (one day every other week when mandatory) were 1.5 pay for all 12 hours.

While I am salary and I have worked a few long weeks here, my company also values comp time when possible. And starting this year we get up to $2k in "vacation reimbursement" to encourage each employee to use their 2 weeks of paid vacation this year.

The vacation reimbursement does not cover gambling loses, unfortunately. But if you can get a receipt for the lap dances you paid for, that might be covered.

I do miss having 4 days a week off at Intel, but that's about the only thing I miss. :rofl:

I am salary + OT at the new job. I really don't know what is considered OT yet but even if it only includes weekends or holidays I am happy. If if is anything over 40 hours I would be ecstatic.

This. Techincally I am hourly, but I have a base I get either way, even if I have to flub to hit a min 40hrs. I would be pissed if I didn't get overtime anymore. That's pretty much the only incentive I have to stay bayond 8 hrs/day here.
