is float bad?

The opposite: Float is good, where it is applied to pedal/cleat mechanisms. "Float" means that the cleat can move (usually, rotate) to some degree after it's fully engaged and retained in the pedal. "Float" allows you to shift weight and/or for your foot to move naturally through the pedal stroke, without clicking out. This is easier on your knees and a good thing.

Check out how much float a Speedplay Frog pedal set has...

no, float is good. float is the amount of space your cleat will move left n right in the binding of the pedal. the amount of float is all a personal preference. generally if you have bad knees the more float the better, speedplays' offer the most float but you better have a grease gun and be willing to put new grease through the grease port after every ride w/ those bad boys. i thought they felt great and they will teach you to become a better spinner but they just don't last if you don't keep them up.

I think you must be an anomoly. I ride with a group of guys that have had Speedplay Frogs for years, and not one pedal set has either worn out or been regularly lubed. As you probably know, but others may not, the greaseport on the outside of each pedal makes it very easy to re-lube/purge the pedals, but it may not be necessary very often if you use quality grease (and certainly not oil).

Mine are EIGHT YEARS OLD (before they were black), and I've lubed them seven times, ie once after every season. This last winter, in disbelief at the Frog's durability, I actually opened them up to check the bearings. Everything is perfect.

For clarity, I am referring to the steel-spindled pedals, I have weighed 200+ pound all 8 years, ride a hardtail on rough trails, stream crossings, etc... and have been known to bash pedals on rocks like a moron. Seriously, I don't know if the Frog is the right pedal for everyone's tastes, but they are a proven, reliable product.

If you have ever ridden the old Look road pedals for any length of time, you would know that float is very very good.

Float is a good thing... Having said that some think that too much float=not as much performance. Too some extent that is true. You just need to determine hat pedals work best for you. I think the new time Impacts would be my first choice for road and i always use Shimano on the MTB end. (i like my 646's)

wore a set out in less then a year. number of times they were plugged up w/ grease b/c they were dead dry 4 w/ really high quality grease.....i couldn't break the plastic bodies i used to smash them on rocks on purpose to actually see if i could break them and they wouldn't. oh the other problem i had w/ em was the cleats....they didn't seem to like me to much.....
