If I lift 20 pound parts all day and the boss wants to increase the weight of the product to 30, I want a freakin' raise!

<edit> Toshi, you get paid more to help fat people, right?
actually, it's true that some surgeries on fat people pay more than the same procedure on a thin person: if it takes 50% longer or somesuch due to the patient having prior operations or being incredibly obese, as it were, then a special modifier that ups the billing is used.

I think there should be a fat person discount. Kind of like frequent flyer miles. I mean, I go years between significant doctor related visits. So if everyone was like me, doctors would be seeking bailouts, too.

They need a Customer Loyalty card system, like the Subway card! Go in for a visit, swipe your card, earn points towards that 3rd chin removal procedure. You could even do "double point Tuesdays".

I think they should work at the pillow factory for $1/day until they're no longer obese. Once they're fit, they can earn the big bucks stacking bricks.

Why is this a more reasonable idea than basing the wage on the supply and demand of (unskilled in this case) labor?
Because anything less is, by definition, theft.

And the shareholders? You know, the guys footing a large part of the bill.
For argument's sake, in my theoretical socialist economy capital would be obtained via the banks through collective loans.

And this is why uneducated, low wage earners support it (as well as unions).
I don't know what to say really. Are you jealous, is it just wage envy? Or does it stem from some unwarranted spite for those below you in society? Maybe it is pathological. Help me out, I'm struggling to understand what could possibly motivate such a caustic variety of apathy.

Jealous that I make more moneyand do less work? Probably not, Inspector Clusoe. Hell, I take 3 months vacation over the winter.

Unions are for the lazy, the unmotivated and the uneducated. The industrial revolution is long since over. Labour laws exist for a reason.

Labor laws are coercive, collective bargaining accomplishes the same thing except without government strong arming.

In a perfect society there would be no mandated minimum wage, instead it would be derived via collective bargaining.

Sweden is notorious for having a significant part of their white collar labor force in unions, because organizing together isn't something stupid people do. Unions are better at ensuring safety, stopping discrimination, and getting better pay than laws are. Laws have loopholes, GOOD unions don't.

You're seriously going to use the "love it or leave it" argument?

:nopity:

understatement (see above)
you two 18 year olds seem to know everything about business dont ya. your "free thinking" college ideology must get you all the bithces huh?

have you been in a union type workplace? have you had to go on strike because your union had sand in their vagina that day?
what can you actually attribute to this conversation other than stating ideas from a book , or ideas your professor told you to think about or better yet, copying and pasting from articles you read on yahoo.com or cnn.com.

i may not be one of the old geezers on here and have all the experience in the world, but what you are both saying is funny. you sound like you are trying to convince yourself.

you talk about sweeden like its god's gift to the union workers. if you love unions so much, then sweeden must be your heaven w/ 27 virgins

I'm disputing his opinion that unions are only for the uneducated, while Sweden has a large percentage(IIRC a majority) of their white collar workers unionized.

In most unions, a strike only comes if negotiations aren't working, and it goes through a vote of the union members. It isn't like "hey, the Phillies lost, lets go strike because I have a hangover and don't want to work".

On topic: I support idea that labor should have a certain amount sovereignty over the products it creates (be it through collective bargaining, etc.). Now it may be that I do not particularly agree with how any one union (obviously UAW in this case) conducts its business, however, the actions of one union in particular do not warrant the abandonment of this ideal in any way, shape, or form. To think otherwise is hypocritical, and plain silly.

For example, if I support the idea that everyone has the right to free speech, I must also support the right for people I do not like to speak freely as well. Do I like the KKK? No, I don't. Do I support the KKK's right to hold rallies in a lawful and nonviolent manner? Yes.

I am many things, but a hypocrite is not one of them.

Off topic (IH8RICE): You consciously entered an area for political discussion and you are outraged to find that that there is a certain degree of idealism there? I find this rather laughable, politics are the manifestation of ideals, get over it.

Every great change in political history started as an ideal, and was undertaken by idealists. This country was founded by idealists. Slavery was ended by idealists. As such, if you hate idealism, stay far, far, faaaar away from politics.

I try to contribute to said discussion in a meaningful and thought out manner, only to be insulted.

I might not be the one who needs to grow up. Food for thought.

I guess now that the debate is not only circular, but personal, I guess I'm done contributing for a while.

My uncle retired from Saturn when he was offered a buyout when they shut down the Saturn plant in Tennessee to switch over to making GM cars.

He was about 45.

Listening to him bitch at Thanksgiving dinner today should be good for a laugh.

Don't take my rants personally, holmes. I just hate to see a young person swayed by reading articles when there is so much more to be learned from people that have experienced things. I'm excited to see young people involved, I just always hope their sources for passion have true merit.

Union organizers are not the same as union members. Sweden is a much different environment than the US and Canada, for what that is worth. How many trailer parks does sweden have? :twitch:
