Rebuilt one of my Hayes G1 calipers tonight (new pistons and seals) and had the oddest thing happen when I was putting it back together. I attempted to torque it to 110 inch-pounds per the instructions (yes I have an inch-lb torque wrench) and the bridge bolts just kept turning but wouldn't reach torque. Damn, I knew I had to be stripping out the threads, but then noticed that the ends of the bolts were starting to protrude from the caliper half about 1/8" and kept on coming. How the HECK can that happen? Pulled it back apart and found the bridge bolts were stretching in the middle, becoming narrow and spreading apart the threads.
Maybe fatigue from years of hard braking softened them up? Anyone ever have this happen? I suppose it's possible my torque wrench is off, but I doubt it.
Very strange.
