I have seriously been contimplating getting a road bike. Just for exercise and transportation reasons. Sometimes I just want to get out and spin, for a long time, go 40 or 50 miles, but riding on the road or whatever sucks on my trail bike. plus, it chews up expensive tires.
And, when I get back to school, I can use it to get to class and the such.

Do I need to be shot?

Plenty of us die-hard MTB'ers own road bikes. Why limit yourself to MTB? Road riding is fun, too. :) I got my first road bike late last summer and there is no doubt road riding has improved my mountain biking strength amd stamina.

Soon as we move into our new house (late August), I am going to ride my bike to work a couple times a week (30 miles each way). That extra 120 miles a week is sure to help build up my spindly legs. :)

you're NOT crazy for wanting a road bike to go road biking, but you ARE crazy for thinking of using the same bike (which will likely cost you at least $400) to ride to school or other commuting.

Buy a road bike.

But also find a $25 rigid mtb/hybrid to ride to school or wherever thefts can happen.

Is theft your reason for telling Mike not to use the same bike for commuting? I plan on using my road bike to commute to work, but the bike comes indoors to my cubicle during the work day.

yes, specifically to school.

However, when/if I start commuting again, I'm gonna ride my mtb. It's only 8 miles and I'll be able to stay off the road. The fvcktards here* either like being difficult to roadies or don't pay attention. Hell, they don't even pay attention or worry about my motorcycle slamming into 'em... and it's a big motorcycle.

* here being the east side of Denver -- opposite side of the mountains. In the foothills/mountains, they're more aware. And rush hours make it worse.

Yeah, I thought about the theft thing...... I already had one bike stolen from school, my old Giant full rigid ;(

I do have a Kryptonite NY2000 lock, and one of those long Kryptonite cables to run through the wheels.

I probably would not end up riding it to school, because I am totally anal about my bikes always being in my sight, I might get a beater at a yard sale or somthing.

Well, I'm off to work now, gonna check out some road bikes whilst I'm there
