Jeezus f*cking Christ people, we can not only prevent a widespread STD but also a large chunk of cancer cases, but these f*cktards are are afraid that young girls *might* have sex?!?!

I am off to get my torch... :mumble:

Virginity or Death!
Katha Pollitt

Imagine a vaccine that would protect women from a serious gynecological cancer. Wouldn't that be great? Well, both Merck and GlaxoSmithKline recently announced that they have conducted successful trials of vaccines that protect against the human papilloma virus. HPV is not only an incredibly widespread sexually transmitted infection but is responsible for at least 70 percent of cases of cervical cancer, which is diagnosed in 10,000 American women a year and kills 4,000. Wonderful, you are probably thinking, all we need to do is vaccinate girls (and boys too for good measure) before they become sexually active, around puberty, and HPV--and, in thirty or forty years, seven in ten cases of cervical cancer--goes poof. Not so fast: We're living in God's country now. The Christian right doesn't like the sound of this vaccine at all. "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful," Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council told the British magazine New Scientist, "because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex." Raise your hand if you think that what is keeping girls virgins now is the threat of getting cervical cancer when they are 60 from a disease they've probably never heard of.

Nauseating.

I think we already had this post once, when the vaccine was first announced as viable. Everyone was all for it, except DT, who hardly represents enough of the population to prevent us from actually saving lives.

how about lying to the young girls and being vague about what the vaccine is for... ya know, if you're such a bad parent that fearing this medicine would be tantamount to permission.

Do you mean misinforming them? Like planned parenthood does about abortion?

If you don't have the kind of relationship with your child where you don't trust them, then what's the big deal about lying to them?

And, Heath, how does this vaccine lead to premarital sex? What concern is it of yours if someone else's kid gets the vaccine?

I have a friend who contracted HPV when she was raped. The rape was bad enough but to live with the threat of cancer through no fault of her own is a huge emotional drain for her. If a vaccine could have prevemted that, how can it be bad?

It would be preventing the will of God. Jesus obviously wanted her to be raped. She probably masturbated once as a teenager.

It's that kind of sick logic that makes it hard to stomach these twits. If that argument is true, boy am I screwed

as a token of defense for the christian right, it'll probably end up being similar to Catholics and birth control... for the vast majority, they hear (or say) one thing on sunday, then go with their own beliefs in reality. I can't imagine the mother of a small girl turning down the vaccine when they're in the privacy of the doctors office.

There are still people that vehemently believe that the earth is flat...I can see parents turning it down left and right no matter what anyone says, save their pastor, or a "vision".....

On the bright side, once enough cervical cancer cases strike the un-vaccinated, then we weed out the bad apples. Just like people that don't believe in unchambering the round before cleaning their guns....
