So after cleaning up my bike last night, I noticed a couple of small lines that could be scratches or cracks. They are on the underside of the headtube/downtube weld, off to either side. The scratch on the right side of the bike (left side in the first pic) was deep enough to catch my fingernail.

I brought it in to the shop tonight and the person I spoke with thought they were just scratches. I suppose that could be possible, but it seems to me like an odd place to have a scratch - and a likely place to have a crack. I left it for the service manager to look at.

It's an older bike (2005), and I ride fairly aggressively, so I've made it a habit to inspect the frame regularly.

I've cracked a few frames and those "scratches" sure look suspect to me.

Scratches tend to be a smooth flowing line, cracks don't. You decide.

Take off the paint in that area and find out.

A crack under the headtube would likely start in the middle. I find it very strange that identical cracks would form on both sides like that. Try buffing the spot. A scratch will just go away.

can we get the second pic with out the flash reflection? that looks like a suspicious scratch to me.

scratches arent so zig-zagy, and it would be awfully coincidental to get them is that place...
