I hate rain when you are NOT READY for it. But I don't mind doing the occaisional XC ride in the rain. Santa Cruz is fun to ride in the rain. But I LOVE the fact that I know it's going to be HOT and DRY in the summer.

Plus I think I have to stop procrastinating and start exploring more trails. Like sacrifice a weekend of DHing in the summer to hit some epic XC trails in Tahoe, which I’ve never done. Plus I want to do a few SoCal trips this summer.

Over already has possession of all the hot babes in SD ;)
Nope... he is a one-Shrymp man now.
;)

Dude.. go check out Henry Coe THIS WEEKEND.
You can ride for days in there and not hit the same trail twice.

It's only 78 degrees right now. It's kinda annoying that it is considering what month it is. So we're thinking of riding Santa Barbara this weekend to "cool off" from all this heat.

Santa Barbara weekend forecast: Lots of gnarly rocks!!

we go through this drama with Acadian every year. Last year's winter depression rant was over "Why race?". There is something about aJanuary in SoCal that encourages Acadian to test a dramatic makeover of some sort :D

And Jeremy, I call shotgun on the trip to Snowshoe bro! Get the NISMO!!!
I always get like that in the winter, too. Seasonal depression, cabin fever, whatever. But it's 11 degrees and snowing here. I was in SF in early January last year, and the weather felt fabulous compared to what we left in Michigan. Y'know, I always wish I lived somewhere with more of an FR/DH riding scene, but I'm starting to think that your local scene is more of what you make of it. Seeing the pics Rob from FL posted yesterday shows me that a scene can be just as much about the cohesion of the riders willing to build as the availability of natural terrain.

Damn true!! Now if we only had some real hills and could get rid of all this sand and humidity!

I have been thinking the same thing! Me and the girlfriend have been talking about this for a while. She has family in Washington that she likes.......and they have riding that I'll like :) Plus I'm getting tired of California. The beach and weather is about all that keeps me here. The people sure as hell don't.

Plus........in the end, Washington allows both my gf and I to start fresh somewhere, somewhere new. I know I can always come back to Santa Barbara if needed. We'll have to see.

I like the idea of Whistler being 4hrs away. That means in the summer it's not far at all. As it sits now I either shuttle our local trails (which aren't bad) or take a major drive to one of the mountains (mammoth, N*). Plus I don't think anyone has seen the end of Whistler. That place will just get better and better over the years.

It's funny too, when you ask where's the best place to ride no one says Utah, or CO, everyone says Whistler. I haven't been yet (hoping to this year) but if people from all over travel just to Whistler to ride then it has to be the best.

you have hit the nail on the head...same for me. I'm not going to generalize, since there are some down to earth people in the area - but most of the people I work with are all the same. Their only value is money - it's all about the car you drive, how big your house is, what area you live in, how you dress, etc... Plus most women around here judge you on your paystub! :(

lately I’ve also been seeing good friends here at work back stab each other just to get more power in order to get promotions or bonus. That is really sad to me..

but there are a few good souls out there...

The nation is escaping to So Cal. So Cal is escaping to the PNW, seeking what attracted them to/kept them in So Cal. The people in the PNW are pissed and have nowhere to go as the place fills full of expatriating Californians...although I bet there's been a steady outflow of people from the PNW for as long as people have had rain.

Everyone in SoCal is looking at WA and OR these days, me included. I'll likely be heading north to SF or WA or OR within a year...

LOL too true. If you don't drive a BMW, have a millon dollar pad, and wear fufu saks 5th ave clothes you're not into it. I'm happy with my Chevy pickup, my 2 room apartment, and my cheap 5 for $10 K-mart shirts :) I don't have the women problem though, She definately ain't with me for the $$$.

It's just true though. I grew up and was born/raised in Santa Barbara. I've lived through everything. My parents never lived in anything but our 2 bedroom apartment. I had buddy's who had pretty big homes and their parents had nice cars and what not. It just wasn't me. I always had nice things though (mainly bikes, BMX and MTN) so I couldn't complain much. In highschool you which kids had money (or their parents). New cars, fancy clothes for school, everything. It was annoying at times because they fit the snob attitude everyone thinks of Cali people. Rich, stuck up, attitude people. Hell there were girls that didn't even get asked to dances because people thought they were too much of a snob.

And now that school's ended and I've been out for a while (5 years almost) I have thought about it and I just don't like most of the people here. Everytime I leave the house I get pissed off at a min. of 2 people driving, usually some old basturd in a fancy car taking his time or someone driving who I can tell doesn't have insurance or registration or a license and THEY cause my insurance to have all this BS coverage for them driving that I pay for. I hate it. Plus our entire city is so about it's image. Everything is. Hell the poor family up the street from us couldn't build a add-on to their house because it stuck too far out. The old turds on the street want 20ft from the sidewalk to the front door and their's would have been 18ft. I'd build it anyways and would care less. Santa Barbara expects new familys to own $700,000 dollar homes that are 50+ years old with no work to them. So they are an expanding family that now has to deal with the logistics of Santa Barbara City permits on BS stuff.

It just pisses me off. Even driving, living, and surviving in SB. I've had people report my license plate to the police because my music was "too loud". I've been pulled over with buddies for looking "shifty"? In school. The cops here suck anyways, they take like an hour to do anything and the city is small. I could make it anywhere in 10 minutes or less. Ahhhhhh sucky SB.

I think I could deal with the rain. Shuttle trails here are all we really have. I dunno, if I did the math I imagine I could get like a whole years worth of riding in 10-15 days in Whistler/North Shore area. I'd want to live somewhere like 30-45 minutes outside of Seattle depending on what sort of job I could find and manage. It rained for 5 days here and it wasn't depressing. Granted I don't work right now so I just play Xbox and clean the bike but it's like anything, you adjust. I'd miss the beach though......it'd be werid to be away from it :(

that is my other fear...stuff is getting closed on a regular basis now.

when I think of all the riding in or near Seattle (XC and DH) - it just doesn't even compare to here.

but again, I got that rain seed planted in my head :(
There is some great riding here and around the PNW area...and I don't think the weather is bad at all. Then again I move here from New York, not So Cal! Man, it must be tough to move anywhere from SoCal weather-wise.

If you really detest the rain this is not the place to be. Save your moving expenses for beer and bike parts. In actuality it does not rain as much as the forecast indicates but it sure does come close.

Cheers......

Come to think of it it does really suck here. Rain 376 days a year, bad traffic, expensive, mean people, no riding, long lines at the border..... Everyone just stay put, nothing to see here......

I'd have to move to seattle and be an urbanite anyway. I checked out bellingham and even the el caminos have bigger lift kits than my tacoma. Plus my rebel/american flag tatoo is fading. That would keep me away more than the rain.

Hey how far of a drive is it from seattle to mt baker?

Oh, no, you don't understand the way stories work, now, do you?

Exaggeration for humorous effect is exponential, and diverges from truth at an ever-increasing rate.

I know this might sound crazy....but honestly, after over a week of riding Whistler late last summer, I was ready to come back to old dusty North Star! and I know...there are more trails there than just the one at the resort.
That IS crazy man. Seriously. The only thing crazier is that despite feeling that way, you're considering a move to Seattle.

Sounds like you were just homesick. Did you miss your pillow or something?

But that's not funny, so it doesn't get entered into the equation. What WAS funny is what happened to you in the 1st turn...but I'll blame that on my poor tutelage.

I don't know what line YOU were taking, but the one I took had absolutley no support at all. I don't know how you made it through "no-brakes".

Oh, umm, yeah, it was a trick. I actually come to a stop and walk my bike through that turn. Orven showed me how...

(generally, we got 'support' through keeping our tires on the ground. Remember what I taught about leaning the bike beneath you? Plus, there's a little berm that's built up against the logs that define the turn...but it's all a moot point now, alas, alas...)

I don't see how it matters... They aren't building the trail back up to what it was. I doubt they'll have so much a jump on the whole mountian.

Of course that's just what I think... I could be totally wrong.
