If you fancy a freecoaster, get a SIC Neutral Gear. . .same idea sorta, you just gotta shift down into it whenever you want to roll back w/o pedaling. Fun little gizmo, I've got one on my bike. . .
Couldn't you just machine the spacer on your 9 to single conversion down to make room for the neutral ring. Then run a rear der locked down (might need to get longer stop screws)? Kinda ghetofab, but would probably get you what you need. If you really wanted to go balls on it, set up a spacer between the SS cog and the neutral ring to mimick the front chainring spacing on a 2-3ring deal, then use a front der shifter so you've only got a couple of choices. Set the deal up so your SS chainline is straight, with the neutral off to one side (the downhill side of the cassette, so it will fall in without cranking as it would probably be easier to utilize in this fashion). The off center chainline shouldn't matter to the neutral cog as you wouldn't be using it to crank down on, but just for coaster stuff right?
