over the past couple of weeks I have some interesting , and slightly disturbing things. I am not talking about abuse of the Handicap reserved spaces, but maybe of a bit of misuse.
I had to go to the DMV last week. I got there before they opened. It was pouring down rain so I decided to sit in the car and wait till they opened. While I was there a person with Handicapped plates pulled in to the lot and proceeded to pull into the handicaped spot. No problem, he had the propper plates and when he got out he did move a bit slow. Now here is where the etiquett part comes in. He and I were the only cars in the customer lot. there were 4 handicapped spots and a hundred regular ones. Although he was obviously deserving of the closer spot. would it not have been a nice jester on his part to take the regular spot that was right next to the handicapped one and save the handicapped on for somone worse off then he? oddly enough I have seen this same action several times over the past few weeks. one was at a bank where the regular spot was actually closer to the door, but the person just had to park in the handicapped spot. 100% legal, but since he was the only car in the lot why not take a regular spot and save the spot with the wheel chair access for somone more deserving. Is it just an old person thing? like my dad, who makes sure he gets his sr. citizen discount and always gets a free re fill no matter if he is thrrsty or not. Do we just need to park in that spot because we can, or should it only be done when it is needed? I am a full supporter of access for everyone to everything, and when I get old I am actually looking forward to driving everyone around me nuts like my dad doese, but wouldnt it just be good manners to only take the handicapped spot when you needed it, keeping in mind that although I walk with a cane, the next person may need a wheelchair??
