we've got a budget of $1200 for a TV. What should we buy? Couch is about 10feet from the screen. Current TV is a huge beast for a 35" screen. It and the armoire take up too much space in the livingroom, so we want something thin.

I might suggest this model:

That supports 1080p for a bit more. If it's out of your price range, it's out of your price range... but it will "future proof" your TV a lot more than the one you linked will.
