the speaker was anything but politically correct in his remarks Monday night at a Constitution Hall bash commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. To astonishment, laughter and applause, the speaker mocked everything from urban fashion to black spending and speaking habits.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal," he declared. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids--$500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' . . .

"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he exclaimed. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' . . . And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. . . . Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. . . . You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"

The Post's Hamil Harris reports that the speaker also turned his wrath to "the incarcerated," saying: "These are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"

When the speaker finally concluded, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking stone-faced. Shaw told the crowd that most people on welfare are not African American, and many of the problems his organization has addressed in the black community were not self-inflicted.

who was the speaker? none other than bill cosby.

i must've missed it, did Cosby say black people? Cuz I thought he said poor people?

Granted, it's easy to slip into stereotypes and assume black peopple... like the NAACP guy did. Unless he was just defending poor black people and not caring about poor other people.

I don't care for Cosby tho, but black leaders do need to kick black poors in the butt.

My wife is a speech therapist, and due to our location (Little Rock) treats alot of black kids. When doing therapy with these kids my wife has them say the word like it is suppose to be pronounced. However other therapist (white mind you) are of the mindset that we should not change them culturally and let the kids pronounce the words like they normally would.

I thought that was an interesting tibit.

Hmmm interesting. I had a coworker for awhile that had a pretty strong accent, and unfortunately most of our customers really struggled to understand him when he got them on the phone. He had a big booming voice, and would relax into a far too casual tone with awful english with our customers who are anal prissy school district folk for the most part. :(

I have to say that the ability to speak, read, and write proper english and clearly pronounce your words is a must in a society with so many different kinds of accents.

I totally agree.

When my wife was getting her Masters, she would help Chinese pilots and air traffic controllers with their english so they could be more understood.

and these folks will no doubt be culprits in the "institutionalized racism" that keeps black folks down. I'm actually being serious. This is on par with affirmative action "rewards" that gets an otherwise unqualified student total access to higher education - especially the defaulted loan for not being able to graduate.
