That fockin' rocks!

If one of the stores here did that, I'd go out of my way to support them.
Me too. But that's one of the coolest things about this. Wegmans makes oodles of money and they really don't have any legitimate competition. Tops just closed all their stores in the region because Wegmans was kicking their asses. They don't need to do this and it will probably end up costing them money. Awesome.

wtf? thumbs down, imposing your morality on someone else by restricting the sale of it? this is like WalMart not selling certain R rated movies, or Maxim magazine.

http://www.wiretapmag.org/stories/24069/

i don't smoke, and I wish other people chose not to, but to have a company shove its morality down our throats is disgusting...

edit: as stevew said, what if they stop selling beer, red meat and anything with processed sugar? "keeping us safe from ourselves now..."

Wegmans is what I consider a higher end supermarket, at least the ones in PA. Awesome foo market type thing with really good meat and cheese department.

but if they're going to stop selling something that is bad for you but still legal, then they'll need to clear out those cheese aisles and fatty meat aisle and all the crap food they sell.

I don't care, I don't grocery shop (wife won't let me) and don't smoke and in the Socialist Republic of Pennsltucky, you can only buy beer where the commonwealth tells you to, and it ain't in Wegmans!

Its the other way around - we already have to pay for people who smoke by the strain they place on the healthcare system.

They should lower the deductions from your paycheck if you don't smoke and increase them if you do. I shouldn't have to foot the bill for the consequences of their habits just as I shouldn't have to pay for the police/ambulance/helicopter/other costs when someone decides to bike/skate/back country access/drink hot coffee at McDonald/whatever with the proper safety precautions and personal responsibility.

Why can't decisions be evaluated independently?

Cigarettes are clearly the worst health risk in a grocery store to society as a whole.

Don't get slippery-slope on us people, it doesn't mean that anything else will disappear.

What I love about Wegmans is that you can by your $700 per pound truffles (kept under lock and key in a glass box) and your toilet paper in the same store.

Not the same thing. I've never heard of anyone dying from secondhand marshmallows.

Great move. I always thought it was funny that drug stores sell tobacco products. A store that sells itself as a place to get products to make you feel better sells products that kill millions.
Hell yeah, they sell tobacco products and nicotine patches. Brilliant.
It reminds me of my lifelong dream to own a stripmall with the following stores:

Baskin Robbins ice cream, Lane Bryant fat women clothes, ABC liquor store, Rehab clinic, Tobacco store, and a Cancer clinic.

never heard of anyone dying from secondhand chewing tobacco either... :twitch:

it just cracks me up that if it was "Wegmans to stop selling beer due to health concerns" the responses would probably be completely different... but hey, as long as its a vice that you're personally opposed to, it's a great decision!! :clapping:

Unlike pharmacies and prescription drugs grocery stores are not the only places that sell toe backy.

They should consider banning bacon as well... ;)

ha, nope, gave it up years ago. it's a vile, disgusting habit, and I would never go back. just think that it's funny that if you have negative connotations about something, restrict it, ban it, tax it, screw anybody who uses it. :clapping:

however, when it comes to a vice that you happen to enjoy (beer, donuts, pron, soliciting prostitutes in a socially responsible, legal manner outside of Las Vegas, whatever), it's suddenly sacrosanct and god help someone who tries to take it away. just interesting to see the positions taken here.... :monkey:

Your Debate-Kung-Fu is weak grasshopper.

Cigs != Beer and none of that crap on your list is remotely equivalent to "little boys"... that's just sick.

At family owned chain of grocery stores here in central va you can't buy beer or wine because of their religious beliefs, but you can buy all the cigarettes you want.

Cigs != Beer
why, just because you like one and don't like the other? change cigs to chewing tobacco and you don't even piss off the neighbors. fact is, if you let the supplier start deciding what you can and can't have based on their perception of the damage it's going to do to you, you've just given up the right to chose for yourself.

heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans today, but for some reason that 1200 calorie tripple whopper with cheese is still available from BK, 500 calorie donuts are available from Krispy Kreme, and buckets of lard are available at my neighborhood meat store.

alcohol kills 20,000 people a year (and that's just drinking to death, not in alcohol related crashes), and approximately 15 million people are addicted to it. it's the cause of untold numbers of driving fatalities, rapes, violence, etc. do you really mean to tell me that if Wegmans trotted out all these facts and said that they weren't going to contribute to the problems caused by alcohol anymore that would be much different than what they're saying now?

If Wegmans stopped selling beer, I would go buy it somewhere else. Just like smokers will go buy cigarettes somewhere else now.

And for those who think they did it for financial benefit, either you didn't read the link, or you think they were carrying a product they lost money on for the last 50 years or so.

keep telling yourself that Norm. :busted:
Nope. But there is zero health benefit to any smoking.

Harvard School of Public Health sez:

It's safe to say that alcohol is both a tonic and a poison. The difference lies mostly in the dose. Moderate drinking seems to be good for the heart and circulatory system, and probably protects against type 2 diabetes and gallstones. Heavy drinking is a major cause of preventable death in most countries. In the U.S., alcohol is implicated in about half of fatal traffic accidents.(1) Heavy drinking can damage the liver and heart, harm an unborn child, increase the chances of developing breast and some other cancers, contribute to depression and violence, and interfere with relationships.

...

Cardiovascular Disease

More than 100 prospective studies show an inverse association between moderate drinking and risk of heart attack, ischemic (clot-caused) stroke, peripheral vascular disease, sudden cardiac death, and death from all cardiovascular causes.(4) The effect is fairly consistent, corresponding to a 25-40% reduction in risk. Results of some of the largest of these are summarized in Table 1.
The connection between moderate drinking and lower risk of cardiovascular disease has been observed in men and women. It applies to people who do not apparently have heart disease. It also applies to those at high risk for having a heart attack or stroke or dying of cardiovascular disease - people with type 2 diabetes (5) and those with high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), a prior heart attack, or other forms of cardiovascular disease.(5-8)

The idea that moderate drinking protects against cardiovascular disease is biologically and scientifically plausible. Moderate amounts of alcohol raise levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol),(6) and higher HDL levels are associated with greater protection against heart disease. Moderate alcohol consumption has also been linked with beneficial changes in a variety of factors that influence blood clotting, such as tissue type plasminogen activator, fibrinogen, clotting factor VII, and von Willebrand factor.(6) Such changes would tend to prevent the formation of small blood clots that can block arteries in the heart, neck, and brain, the ultimate cause of many heart attacks and the most common kind of stroke.

....

The benefits of moderate drinking aren't limited to the heart. In both the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, gallstones and type 2 diabetes were less likely to occur in moderate drinkers than in nondrinkers. (11-13)

The social and psychological benefits of alcohol can't be ignored. A drink before a meal can improve digestion or offer a soothing respite at the end of a stressful day; the occasional drink with friends can be a social tonic. These physical and psychic effects may contribute to health and wellbeing.
