OK, I am relativly computer literate, however, I need to really free up some resources on my system, without compromising my security. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Get rid of everything Symantic (Norton) on your system, and replace it with AVG antivirus (free edition - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1).

I would also uninstall those half dozen spyware programs you have and download the new Windows Defender from Microsoft - it's a good program. Maybe keep one other one (Spy Sweeper is a good one), but turn off the "active" monitoring and just use it to clean up whatever the Microsoft program misses by scanning once a week.

Getting rid of Norton will give you a huge boost, though.

Seriously... I just read that log file again, and do you see how much of that is Symantic stuff?

What a bloated piece of crap. They need to can their entire programming team, delete everything they ever wrote, and start over. Not everyone wants 15% of their system resources going to a single background process

yeah, the Norton was a bit interesting. I've been using registry doctor and it seems to be a thorough program.

I have cable internet, and apparently the my IP is on a damn hit list because I have a crap-full of stuff hitting all of the computers in the house.

BTW the trend Microsystems seems to grab more crap (or different) than Spysweeper...

Thanks for the heads up! :thumb:

Registry Doc is actually a little too thorough. It has f**ked some registries at places I've worked.

The one from TuneUp that I pasted is very effective and the program is extremely low profile - it doesn't install anything that runs in the background, it just loads when you ask it to and goes away when you quit.

I think that you've posted this before. I took it off my father in laws computer and the difference was ridiculous.
Yeah, I think manimal posted in the tech forum at one point that he was wondering if Norton always sucked or if it was just his computer.

With a great program like AVG being given away free, I see no reason to use a resource hog like Norton. I even paid for my AVG license just to throw some money at a good company developing a good product.

I wasn't very impressed with AVG and went back to Symantec, partly because it is free via Comcast but ostly because AVG let an infected file through within a couple of weeks of me installing it.

Haven't had it let anything go through but I will say that the default update option is only to update the virus files once a week which is downright silly.

There are still other options to the resource-intensive Symantic though :)

Try avast! instead, one of the best free virus suites...
