a year and a half a go, when companies turn to 165 and even 170mm enduro bikes, I talked with friends and told them that in 2 years, we will see DH bikes with 12 speed 9-50 cassettes... with single crown forks...
and today I saw that on PinkBike

what do you think guys?
is this the future?

In fairness the Megavalanche is a very specific race. It sees everything from full on DH bikes to enduros and all manners of hybrids between the two, if that's a 180mm 36 up front it's not losing much to a 40, except stiffness that isn't really needed here.

I doubt this setup would be seen much outside of this specific race or at bike parks with chairlifts.

if you dont have to pedal up, you can go full DH bike.
but I think that with materials today, and DH frames going down weight, you can build a DH bike that can pedal uphill.

Ehm not really.
You could ride anything down a hill but that doesnt make it a dh bike.
Full dh bikes are also not as fast or fun going down a hill in many cases unless youre talking full on dh track.
Its not just about materials and weight. Its just as much about angles and dimensions.

Try pedalling a super slack bike up a hill for a while and report back.

I argue that. A couple of years ago (read: before the current crop of ENDURO bikes and Strava) I timed a bunch of bikes of my quiver on a then local trail that was fairly smooth, mainly shallow downhill but with an about 30 sec climb in the middle and tight switchbacks towards the end. We also used to ride up it on trail rides. Guess what, the DH bike was fastest (tested were 4X full susser 5+4" travel, trail bike 6+5.5", FR bike 7+7.5", DH bike 8+8").

Disclaimer: all bikes were unridabru VPPs and the winning DH bike the "long legged trail bike", also know as Socom (although with slacker dropouts).

Depends on your strength/fitness/determination.
I got my ass handed to me on a short hilly (12mile/3000ft) XC ride by a guy on a 45lb Trek Diesel (remember those?) once... it had a 11-25 cassette and a 42T ring so he just stood up on all the climbs destroying us all.
and I know guys who'll ride up and down all day long at a local uplifted DH venue.
It's nothing new in places like Scotland where decent DH tracks are plentiful but uplift is limited.

Try pedalling a super slack bike up a hill for a while and report back.
Did it all day yesterday.. .I'm not sure what point you're trying to make?
Been doing it forever infact. My XC bike back in 1999 was a 62deg 100mm hardtail

your all right.
but time will tell. things have changed in the last 2 years.
bikes that was 65 HA a few years a go, were DH bikes. today, a lot of enduro bikes are 65HA
my first DH bike 13 years a go was 170mm and now, there are many enduro bikes with 170mm...
I used to pedal this 170mm DH bike uphill too....
it is a matter of time till we will have 200mm enduro bikes.

As scientific as that sounds, untill I see bikes at XC Worlds with DH geometry Im not convinced... :dirol:

Ive been riding 160mm Meta AM on my xc trails for a while now.
And even though I can still keep up with my buddies this doesnt mean my bike is as fast on these trails as my full xc carbon bike was...

Unfortunately it also doesnt say as much about my fitness level as it does about my buddies...

Honestly? Who gives a fuck? (Unless you and your buddies happen to be competing in an XC race at the time?)

¡Mira, una ardilla!
The WC tracks will evolve to best accommodate the current crop of top DH bikes. That's it. If The Industry™ wants the layman to run 29-inch wheels, they will build tracks where they exceed. And if they somehow magically determine a long-legged enduro bike is making them more money, I'm more than sure we will see more and more mellow tracks where a single crown fork won't be much of a penalty*.

Now excuse me, I gotta go make me a new tinfoil hat, this one is starting to tear off and I can feel them spy satellites poking through my brain.

*Fuck Pietermaritzburg or whatever it's called!!!

Who gives a fuck?
Pretty much everyone who rides a bike gives a fuck.
This is why most people upgrade their bikes every other time the bike industry farts, because they want a new and fancy bike, not because they are forced too by the big bad bike industry...

Its super punk rock and anti establishment that youre fit enough to pedal a steel fully rigid xc bike with a 62degree ha up and down a hill. But lets be honest, most people are fat and or at least out of shape, and want the latest and greatest cause at the end of the day, its just more fun...

What world do you live in?
"most" people don't even ride bicycles. Out of the millions who do there're only an absolutely miniscule percentage who give enough of a shit to want to upgrade it.

Yeah. I'm pretty fuckin' rock n roll. :rockout:

In all honesty I'd be pretty fucking embarrassed to own a fancy bike at all (never mind all the bikes I do) if I didn't have the fitness to ride the fucking things as intended.
You wanna know what actually does make any bike a lot more fun to ride? skill and fitness! neither of which need cost a single penny!

I remember a talk about this exact V10 on a french forum. And there is also a Mondraker Summun that has been modified to have only 160mm or rear travel.

These bikes are far from stock, they have a specific combination of angle sets, offset bushings, limited stroke shocks...

I still pedal my full DH bike up all the trails. I just like riding the DH bike and having that extra cushion. I pedal up to go down so I could care less if it takes me a few minutes longer to climb. And the Pinion gearing is so low it makes it nice.

I did 3 enduro races with my Entourage with a 180mm fork up front , 42lbs when I first started racing it , was 36lbs by the time I got smart and switched to a Process .

I literally have no idea what is happening in here. IMO if you are an absolute shredder you can roll an EWS style enduro bike in a bike park and hang with most anyone. If you want to hang with the fastest of the fast or race, get a DH bike. If you putz around, and have little skill, and never go uphill, you also need a dh bike. Less people need DH bikes these days but some do.

You are correct man. The 'super punk rock' big tires short travel thing has hit here hard. It's almost always the worst option for real trails. We did a ride this past weekend which was this underground stage race/enduro thing, it was roads mixed with fucked up greasy dh's...Essentially all the real mtb guys (on real mtb's) nailed the DH's and had fun, all the guys on the hipster bikes had their asses handed to them in the woods and walked sections...All depends on what you want to ride...
